University should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study.
It would be irresponsible to reject the speaker’s assertion around such an essential educational issue, meanwhile, it’s also tempting to totally agree with it. Education, for a long time, is an erudite and intricate area for human. In my defense, as long as a person has the will and ability to abtain knowledge as much as possible, the university should act like a server to allow and supply all needs but never maintaining the role of mandator or ditatctor.
The university, existing as the main tool and place of illuminating and enlighting the human’s mental capacity, assumes a huge burden to build lots and lots of elites and brilliant minds for our society, intellectually, morally and spiritually. No wonder one should receive the best education here. Even the war and political crisis of China in late 18th century, the Peking University always bare to figure out methods to continue cultivating and spattering the bright seeds of hope to its students and faculty. This is a world fulfiled with challenges and conjuctures, as the mental designer, universities are bound not just to require their students to fix on one major or course, but various facets of the human knowledge. In order to learn to be a powerful human who’s physically and mentally strong enough to insist standing on the earth and bear all the obligations inevitably belonged to him\her.
Moreover, as a single person who needs to survive and thrive in the society, certainly, more fields of skills and knowledge, more possibilities there will be around his\her life corners. There is no denying that college graduates have more chances to find lucrative jobs than do the high-school graduates, knowledge has its own special power to serve and of advantage to a person’s living condition. Architecture also needs its students to learn aesthetics; Education requires the skills of psychology and addministration; even Engineer prefer the students to get an access to familiar with literature and art. All courses have their unique and peerless characters that others don’t possess, vice versa, their own defiencies could be fixed by learning from other fields’ singularities.
Nontheless, even though I totally agree with the more opportunities should supply for the students to immerse in courses that don’t belong to their own major, the energy and ability behind the learning still need a deep thought. The fast-shifting world with increasing developing power doesn’t expect dilettantes and dabblers knowing thousands of hodgepodges of different knowledge but without a single special skill or any deeply professional stucture conception. Besides, it could be an unnecessarily huge waste of the university and him\herself to fan out the energy in plethora courses, some of which even won’t be useful. Hence, it should be benefitial and benign if it could be handled and controled in a rational and reachable range.
