It's a story about a girl named Jane Eyre, whose fate was formally miserable but finally perfect by her own struggle and perseverant of her goal. And the progressive thinking that was reflected in this novel was that women should change their fate by themselves. Nobody should surrender to fate. When you are in trouble, do not lose your faith and belief. Keep the faith, and make yourself get stronger. 1. The demonstration of the progressive thinking in Jane Eyre and how did Jane Eyre make decisions 1.1 The Accusation in Front of Aunt Reed The days in Gateshead may be the most insufferable days in Jane's life. She was abused and insulted by her cousins; detested and abominated by her aunt Reed; taunted and sneered by the servants in Gateshead, and she was even kept in the red-room which her uncle Reed's sprit was always appeared allegedly. And she didn't deserve all of that. Jane's young heart was so deeply hurt by all of these unbearable sufferings that she realized how to resist and fight against this unfairness in a way which a ten-year-old girl would come up with. Before she was sent to the boarding school by aunt Reed, Jane stood in front of Reed and shouted at her about the hatred that she felt. And these accusations actually become the behavior of how she fight against the unfair fate. The young Jane was not clear about other ways but yelling and swearing at aunt Reed “That punishment you made me suffer because your wicked boy struck me----knocked me down for nothing. I will tell anybody who asks me questions, this exact tale. People think you a good woman, but you are bad, hard-hearted. You are deceitful!”[2]And the merciless aunt abandoned Jane, she was going to be sent to the boarding school. 1.2 Life at the boarding school Actually, life at the boarding school was not that happy, however, when Jane arrived there she found that it was a circumstance that worse than Gateshead: inferior food and living condition, the insult of the headmaster made life here more miserable for her. But thanks to Helen and Miss Temple's help and accompaniment, she lived through every difficulty. And her own tenacity and persistence also supported her to get through all those hard times. Her cleverness made her school life successful, and because of that she was able to stay and became a teacher of the school which was renovated by the public charity. But after her only best friend--Miss Temple got married and left the school, Jane found the life in this school became boring and senseless. She stood by the window and looked at the view outside the school, suddenly realized that her desire for the outer world was so strong. She wanted to get into the society, and she also wanted to change her present situation by her own effort. And she managed to find a job as a tutor; this would be another turning point of her life. She was unwilling to be fettered by the school's enclosing wall, which decided her later life would be very splendid and wonderful. The author has also showed us another important point of view: No matter who you are, no matter what your life used to be like, your fate is at your hand. If you chase and fight for it, you will get whatever you want. This truth is also meaningful for people in nowadays Jane's wisdom and foresight has become the model for many female readers. 1.3 Love between Jane And Rochester After Jane went into Thornfield to be a tutor, she fell in love with her employer Rochester, so did he. They had the same opinions on many things and knew each other very well, their spirits corresponded. Jane's social status and capacity were totally different than that of Rochester, but his unremitting and persevering courtship touched Jane deeply. From the probe phase to the final state of acknowledging each other's feelings, Jane was consistently aware of what she was doing, and she was always neither haughty nor humble. Although she also loved Rochester with all her heart, she didn't curry favor with him or obey him unconditionally just because his status and property. She just kept her mind clear and always analyzed her emotion calmly and objectively. Facing the uncourteous action of Rochester, she expressed her disagreement bravely, told him they were the same actually. And the confession in the garden was the most marvelous part of this book. The scorn that Jane yelled out to Rochester totally incarnated her pursuit of freedom, equality and ideal love. “I have as much soul as you, and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;—it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal,—as we are!”[3]These sentences hugely shocked Rochester and subdued by glamour of Jane's personality. It was this brave Jane made Rochester felt more admiring about her, and finally decided to confess his feelings to Jane. These two people finally accepted each other. Jane at that time, was undoubtedly intrepid. Here, Jane's independent character was also presented perfectly to us: She thinks everyone are equal, everyone has the opportunity and right to love another. There is no class in love. 1.4 Jane's Way of Loving Rochester The day before their wedding, Jane rejected Rochester's precious gifts and she insisted the habit that they would meet at evening and chat. This kind of decisions showed us the fact that Jane didn't lost herself just because she got the love and the man that she wanted. She wanted to love Rochester in a independent way, not to rely everything on him. The jewelries and gifts given by Rochester seemed keepsakes, but actually the author used them as a metaphor to tell us that they were a chain. Rochester tried to turn Jane into his own property. But Jane kept to herself and refused his grants, and told Rochester that she would never belong to or became anyone, she was always herself. Only by this way can she marry him willingly. This kind of view was definitely progressive and rare. 1.5 Jane's Choice between Love and Dignity During the wedding of Jane and Rochester, an accident happened. Two unexpected man burst into the church and claimed the wedding should stop because of the existence of Rochester's legal wife. Although his wife has became a lunatic, the matrimony between them was still legitimate. Jane suddenly sunk into great sorrow. Facing Rochester's urge of her staying beside him, she had no choice but to refuse him. Because her dignity told her so and she must leave Thornfield and Rochester for a totally strange place and gave up everything that she had here, because she could not bear to marry Rochester when the insane wife was still alive. That would not only disobeyed the moral principles of hers, but also transgressed Jane's principle for herself. Maybe there would be some readers thinking that why wouldn't Jane just stay beside Rochester and keep on loving him as usual? T he answer is ,if Jane chose like that, she wouldn't be Jane Eyre anymore. The most important thing that she pursued with all her life was independence, so how could she stay and become a mistress of Rochester and lived everyday in the panic of fearing of losing his love and support? Then the independence would leave her, she would became nothing but a outer form. She'd rather give up love to keep the dignity beside her. Although painful and grieved, she chose to leave Thornfield, left the man that she loved the most in her life. Her brave behavior showed her choice between love and dignity--she chose dignity. She'd rather sacrifice her love to chase for independence and dignity. 1.6 Jane's Return and the Achievement of Her Independence At the end of the book, with a large amount of her uncle's legacy and a brand new image, Jane came back to Rochester whose wife was burned to death in an accident. Finally she got both love and dignity. She returned to Thornfield and finally chose the blinded, bankrupt Rochester which proved that what Jane wanted was just pure love and she loved Rochester not because his wealth but his sincereness and enthusiasm. The equal love finally achieved by Rochester's misfortune. This kind of arrangement actually balanced the relationship between these two people. And the end, the story was full of metaphor too. Rochester was accepted by Jane under his most miserable circumstance. Jane became his legal wife and the lighthouse of his life. Most importantly, Jane got the power of govern the manor. Jane Eyre successfully overturned the normal sequence of Thornfield. These proved the theme of this novel--woman's resistance and the process of finding themselves. 2. Demonstrate the Progressive thoughts of Jane Eyre by comparing Jane Eyre with other European novels during the 1940s 2.1Some other European Novels during the 1940s When your life has become so dependent on a habit as strong as our habit of loving, it hardly seems possible that the habit can be broken without also demolishing everything else which buttresses your life. --- The Lady of the Camellias[1] In the novel The Lady of the Camellias, Alexandre Dumasfils portrayed a miserable female image called Marguerite. She was a kindhearted and a gorgeous woman and her loyalty of love really impressed the readers. But her powerlessness of her own fate makes us feel indignant and pity for her. As she said, the effect made by love almost ruined her. Love has completed her, and love has destroyed her at the same time. As a female, under that very social background and that epoch ,may be this kind of misery of hers was inevitable. But the crucial reason may probably be her own character. She always chooses surrender to fate when there is nobody for her to rely on, she would lose her way and have no ability to seize anything she has ever wanted. In the novel The Resurrection written by Lev Tolstoy, the image Katyusha Maslova had a more tragic life. After she had abandoned and cheated by her lover, she became a prostitute and was put into prison. She didn't forget the man that has abandoned her, even planned to take revenge on him. Although she got back to the right track at the end of the novel, all we can see and learn from this woman was the indelible scar that the unfairness of fate had left on her flesh and heart. We have to admit that she did surrender to fate too. 2.2 Comparison But Jane Eyre is totally different. She is a pure, smart and strong-hearted woman. Her status was at the bottom of that society and had experienced a lot of insults and tribulations from her childhood. The hardships of her life was really made readers felt sympathetic, but her unbending to fate and the quality that dare to chase for her own happiness were respected and commended by the readers through almost two centuries. No matter how life had tortured her, she still stood strong and had never lost herself and this point is the most perfect incarnation of the progressive thinking of this novel.T his novel has also posed a brand new point of view--the correspondence of soul. It's not hard to imagine whether the result would be totally different if Marguerite and Maslova's tragedy falls on Jane Eyre. Just as Jane had said :"My spirit can address yours, as if both have passed through the grave and stood before heaven equal."So the portrayal of women character was undoubtedly progressive in Jane Eyre, and it's also why it still welcomed and fancied by thousands of readers after a prolonged time. I am going to expound if we cannot both have love and dignity in our hand, then what we should and must choose, is dignity definitely. Conclusion Jane's choice may seem extreme at recent times. But it is the personality that decides the difference of fate between men and women. The reason that Jane Eyre has been loved by many readers, especially female readers is that Jane has some beautiful qualities. She has an independent character and she doesn't rely on anybody but herself. Her self-respect, dedication to her job and the urge for improvement has deeply touched numerous readers. Her resistance on her own principle, her pursuit for true love makes her a lovely image in the European Literature of 19th century. Her story showed us how to choose between dignity and love when you cannot get both of them. Nowadays, some people tend to surrender to seductions and forget who they are. By analyzing her progressive thinking which reflected in her different period of life ,we can find out that we have to stick on ourselves, cause dignity always achieves a successful personality, we must rely on ourselves to change our future and achieve our dreams.
