Oral Assignment One (Due September 8, Tuesday) 1. Click on the speaker icons and write down the tones you heard (just the tones, no sounds; see Note 1 below on how to type tone marks): 2. Click on speaker icons and write down the sounds in pinyin (just the sounds, no tones) 3. Read the following written in Pinyin and record it with as much accuracy as possible. Pay attention to tone changes. You may want to listen to the text with audio clips online first. Try to imitate the speakers (yours truly and my daughter). Use Wavesurfer to check your tones (see http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/dept/chinese/WavesurferHelp.htm on how to use it). To record, right click on the speaker icon and choose “Sound Recorder Document Edit” and then choose “Edit” to bring up the recorder control panel. Click the red button to record and the square button to stop. Slide the cursor to the beginning to start over. Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma? Wǒ búshì lǎoshī. Wǒ shì xuésheng. Nǐ ne? Nǐ guìxìng, jiào shénme míngzi? Wǒ yě shì Měiguó rén. Wǒ shì Niǔyuē rén. 4. Click on the speaker icons for A, listen carefully and then do the following: a. Transcribe what you hear in Pinyin including tones. b. Translate what you hear into English. c. Respond/Answer the questions in Pinyin. d. B: Note 1: How to type tone marks on a regular keyboard: (Do not leave out tone marks! Do not use numbers or hand-written marks for tone marks!): 1). Use ‘–‘ (the dash) for high tone (traditionally known as the 1st tone) 2). Use ‘/’ (forward slash) for the rising tone (traditionally known as the 2nd tone) 3). Use ‘_’ (underscore) for the low tone (traditionally known as the 3rd tone) 4). Use ‘\’ (backward slash) for the falling tone (traditionally known as the 4th tone). 5). Use nothing to stand for no tone (also known as neutral tone). (ex. Zhong-guo/;): Note 2: How to submit your file (Do not forget to print out a hard copy before you submit): Important: Do not forget to rename the file with your full name; otherwise, your file may wipe out other files or be wiped out by others’ files! Be sure to use Internet Explorer, not Firefox! 1. Go to: http://sisyphus.sdsu.edu/larclab/external.html 2. Click on: Submit your class materials 3. Username: zhang_CHINESE101-02    (for 10AM class) 3. Username: zhang_CHINESE101-03     (for 11AM class) 4. Password: larc_zhang 5. You will see the following: FTP root at larcmaterials.sdsu.edu To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer. 6. Follow the instruction and put in the username/password combination again. 7. Drag your file onto the blank space on the server.
