820 FLIGHT International, 22 May 197S 10 M 12 K E Y Structure and accommodation 1 Forward pressure bulkhead 2 Standard three-crew flight deck (two supernumerary seats) 3 Crew entry door (48in x 24in) 4 Upper-deck toilet 5 Baggage and coat stowage (pro- vision for galley) 6 Upper-deck cabin (16 seats shown) 7 Rear galley with provision for service lift (optional) Passenger entry door, plug type (76in x 42in), one of eight Spiral staircase to upper cabin and flight deck First-class lounge (28 seats) Forward galley (offset to right) Forward cargo hold, 1,730 cu ft (10 containers shown) Additional stiffeners and sound- proofing added to upper lobe Modified front wing spar/fuselage frame Overwing fuselage structure similar to existing aircraft Potable water tanks (three with 70gal capacity each, space for two additional tanks) Toilets (four) Nine-abreast economy-class cabin Overhead luggage bins (pull- down) Service panel Aft galley unit Rear underfloor cargo hold, 1,730 cu ft (400 cu ft additional space) Rear pressure dome Extended fin t ip (60in) Redesigned tail section (rotated up 1°) Lowered fin base (38in) Fin torque box strengthened to absorb extra rudder loads New tailplane tips (60in) Modified centre wing box, front- section water/methanol, rear four sections sealed for fuel Wing essentially 747-100/200B, but weight decreased throughout Air conditioning A I Delivery air from APU to conditioning packs A2 Air-conditioning packs (total three) C 2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7 C8 C9 (hy Controls CI Two-piece double-hinged rud- der Dual control unit (hydraulically actuated) Tab link Tailplane incidence actuator (2° additional leading-edge up travel) Tailplane pivot point Split elevator Elevator control unit draulically actuated) Variable-camber flaps \ Fixed-camber flaps J pneumatically actuated trie back-up Spoiler panels actuated by individual hydraulic units (in- flight speed-brake position reduced from 45° to 30°) Single-slotted variable-pivot flap Rotary actuators (hydraulically driven) Four-bar linkage Inboard flap hinged panel (eliminates buffet) Flap cross-over torque drive- shaft (hydraulically driven with electric back-up) Inboard aileron (hydraulically actuated) Outboard aileron (hydraulically actuated) Control-cable run along top of fuselage Fuel system Fl Inboard main tank (20,300 Imp gal) Outboard main tank (7,000 Imp gal) Outboard reserve tank (830 Imp gal) Modified outboard dry bay tank Vent surge tank Centre wing tank (10,700 Imp gal) The 747SP, shown in this presentation by "Flight" artist John Marsden, is more than just a cut-back 747-100. The fin and tailplane have been extended, the flaps simplified and empty weight reduced by 42,0001b. Several internal arrangements are possible, providing mixed-class seating for between 281 passengers at nine-abreast and 305 at ten-abreastt or single-class economy seating for up to 390 passengers. If a main deck baggage compartment is used, the full 3t860 cu ft of the lower hold can be used for cargo. A unique feature of the 747SP is the offset longitudinal galley CI3 CI4 A3 Duct from engines, tapped from 8th and 15th stages A4 Heat exchanger A5 Conditioned-air plenum cham- ber A6 Riser ducts to cabin zones (both sides) A7 Flexible ducts to individual louvres A8 Insulated cabin walls A9 Duct to upper cabin and flight deck AI0 Pressure-relief valves (two) A l l Outflow valves (two) AI2 Pneumatic duct to engine thrust-reverser AI3 Hot-air delivery duct and spray tube (wing anti-icing) F7 hU F9 F I 0 F l l F I 2 F I 3 F I 4 F I5 F l o Pressure fuel l ing/defuel l ing couplings (two per wing) Overwing filler points (one per wing) Override transfer pumps Two AC-d riven boost pumps per main tank Je t t i son / fue l l i ng /de fue l l i ng manifold Jettison nozzle Contents probes (total 63 per aircraft) Vent manifold (also in skin stringers) Vent outlet (NACA duct under- wing) Fuel feed/crossfeed manifold linking all engines Pow P I P2 P3 P4 PS P« P7 PS P9 P I 0 P l l P I I P I 3 Powerplant and A P U •" Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7A/7F high-bypass two-spool turbofan Front engine mounting Rear engine mounting and yoke Upper pylon support Diagonal brace "Fixed-lip" cowl Acoustically treated fan exhaust Fan reverser only New fixed sleeve Engine access doors Pneumatically driven thrust- reverser actuator Garrett APU APU air inlet PI4 Cooling-air iniet to accessories PIS Ejector-cooled exhaust duct Hydraulics, electrics & emergency equipment H I Engine-driven hydraulic pumps (four independent systems, one per engine) H2 Air-driven pump (back-up for each system) H3 System reservoir (one per system) H4 One 60kVA alternator per engine H5 One 60kVA alternator on APU, 90kVA when APU-driven FLIGHT International, 22 May 197S 821 H6 Electrical and electronics ser- vice bay Equipment centre for battery, transformers, rectifiers and inverters Flight engineer's panel Main circuit-breaker panel Pilot's overhead panel Electrically heated windshield Freon gas bottles in forward and rear cargo hold APU Freon fire-extinguisher system H I 4 Engine pylon fire bottles (Freon, two per pylon) H 7 H8 H9 HIO H I I H I 2 H I 3 U ndercarriage U l Forwarding-retracting hydrauli- cally actuated nosegear 49 x 17 30-PR tyres Twin steering cylinders Main undercarriage components reduced in weight (46 x 16 26- PR tyres) Body-undercarriage twin steer- ing cylinders Modified 747-100 brake units U2 U3 U 4 U5 Radio and instruments Rl Split-axis dual weather-radar scanner and waveguide R2 Localiser aerials ( I , 2 and 3) R3 Glideslope aerials (I and 2) R4 VHF aerial I R5 VHF aerial 2 R6 ATC aerial I R7 ATC aerial 2 R8 DME aerial I R9 DME aerial 2 RIO ADF loop I R l l Marker beacon RI2 ADF loop 2 RI3 ADF sense (I and 2) RI4 LRRA RI5 VHF aerial 3 (provisional) RI6 VOR aerial (I and 2) RI7 HF aerial (I and 2) RIB Static-discharge wicks (glass- fibre) Lighting and instruments LI Upper and lower rotating beacons L2 Navigation tights L3 Logo light (both sides) L4 Landing lights (three beams per side) L5 Wing inspection light L6 Taxi lights L7 Pitot static head (two per side) L8 Incidence vane L9 Temperature probes
