Tianyi Pavilion Tianyi Pavilion is located downtown beside the beautiful Moon Lake. It was built by Mr. Fan Qin, a high-ranking official equivalent to today's national defense minister, during the reign of Emperor Jia Jing's in the Ming Dynasty. Tianyi Pavilion is the oldest well-preserved private library in China today. It is a combination of culture, social studies, history and art. Tianyi Pavilion Museum occupies over 26,000 square meters. The overall layout is Tianyi Pavilion, Eastern Garden, The Chens' Ancestral Hall, The Qings' Branch Ancestral Hall, Calligraphy and Painting Hall and Local Chronicles Hall. Tianyi Pavilion keeps a large collection of about 300,000 ancient books, among which 80,000 are rare copies including the woodcut copies and handwritten copies of the Song and Ming Dynasties. They are rich sources of local chronicles and imperial examinations and are precious materials for the study of history, people, social customs and habits. Tianyi Pavilion Library is called the "Book City of South China". Tianyi Pavilion is not only world famous for its wide collection of books, but also for its unique architecture and elegant landscape. Tianyi Pavilion Library is a major historical and cultural site under state protection, and is also one of the major symbols of Ningbo. Hemudu Cultural Relics Hemudu Cultural Relics, which is located in Hemudu Village in Yuyao City, has been verified to have a history of 7,000 years. From the site, large amount of rice, animal’s remains, fruits, wooden buildings oars, thousands of ceramic vessels and primitive handcraft have been excavated. This stands to prove that Ningbo is the first place to grow rice. Like the yellow valley, Yangzi Valley, it’s also the origin of China’s brilliant culture. It is a national-level historic preservation unit  and a base for national patriotism education. And a museum of Hemudu Relics has been built with inscriptions from Chairman Jiang Zemin. Researchers can find here many objects and documents for the study of human history. Liangzhu Cultural Park As a matter of fact, the love story of Liang and Zhu is not simply a legend, but it had a prototype in history. In the local chronicles, like chronicles of Ningbo Prefecture and Chronicles of Yinxian County, there are definite accounts of about Liang Shanbo. According to historical records, Liang Shanbo was born in Kuiji (today’s Shaoxing) in the East Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD). He was once County Governor in Yinxian County. Old records indicate that Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai used to be classmates for nearly 3 years and Shanbo was too innocent to suspect that Yintai was in fact a girl. This corresponds with the record in Chronicles of Ten Provinces and Four Ethnic Groups about the righteous woman Zhu Yingtai who shares one grave with Liang Shanbo. This citation not only tells us of the location of Liang Shanbo Temple, but also quotes the ancient chronicles in the early Dang Dynasty on the Liang-Zhu story. These are the earliest records on the story of Liang and Zhu in Chinese history. Although there are many other relics which are supposed to be related to the lovers in China, there’s only one Liang Shanbo Temple and it’s here in Ninbo. After careful field investigations by authoritative experts on folk arts, it has been confirmed that the origin of Liang and Zhu story is the Shanbo Temple in Gaoqiao Town. The 30-hectare Liang-Zhu Cultural Park is a theme park with Liang Shanbo Temple as the central building and the love story as its theme. Right at the entrance of the park is a large color fresco, on with hundreds of flowers are bursting into bloom with a rainbow arching in the background, and the butterflies, symbols of the wish that “true lovers can join together at last”, are flying toward the unfathomable blue firmament. It seems that these symbols of love are inviting visitors to step into this holy palace of love. Baoguo Temple Baoguo Temple is seated on the mountainside of Lingshan Mountain, about 15 kilometers (around 9.3 miles) away from downtown Ningbo City. As a cultural relic spot under state-level protection, it was initially established in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) and rebuilt and expanded in later dynasties. The present Baoguo Temple is a mixture of constructions made by various dynasties. At the gate of Baoguo Temple stand two stone pillars with Buddhist scriptures, which date back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Inside the temple, along the central axis are located the Mahavira Hall (the Grand Hall), the Kwanyin Hall, the Devaraja Hall and the Scripture Repository. Around the Grand Hall are scattered the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower and the Guest House, and so forth. The Grand Hall is the main construction of the temple. Built in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), it is one of the oldest and the best-preserved example of wooden architecture south of the Yangtze River. Today, the Grand Hall is still a mystery to scientists. No bird builds its nest in the Grand Hall; even no insect lives in the hall and the hall always remains free of dust. Some say that it's because the wood used in the hall gives out a special scent which frightens away these insects. More people believe it's because of its extraordinary style of construction. The hall is built without a single nail and the girders, pillars, columns are joined together neatly. When the wind comes into the hall, it swirls and produces a sound wave which scares off birds and insects and takes away the dust. There are 17 showrooms open to the public, such as the exhibition rooms of Kwanyin statues, bronze wares, the local customs of marriage, and notable scientific and technological discoveries and inventions of the 20th century. Tourists have the chance to enrich themselves with knowledge during their visit.
