Doubted his empire – that were low indeed.
God shall never force me to admit I was defeated by his anger or force. I shall never get down on my knee to ask for forgiveness and recognize his power. I have lately shaken his ruling through this terrifying battle.
Since, by fate, the strength of gods,
And this empyreal substance, cannot fail;
Since, through experience of this great event,
In arms not worse, in foresight much advanced,
We may with more successful hope resolve
To wage by force or guile eternal war
As we are born with the power of angels and the heavenly body, we cannot be destroyed. And through the experience of the battle, we come to realize that we are not weaker in force and much advanced in foresight, so we can hope for a better success in the future and determine to start eternal war against God, either by power or wisdom.
The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.
What matter where, if I be still the same,
And what I should bem all but less than he
Whom thunder hath made greater? Here at least
We shall be free; th’Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy…
My mind is so powerfully independent that it can make a Heaven out of Hell and a Hell out of Heaven. What does it matter where I am if I am still the same. And why should I be inferior to God, who has made himself more powerful by thunder? Here at Hell we at least enjoy freedom and it is not under his ruling…
