Youth are facing mental health problem What are the biggest problem facing youth today? We could start with the age-old alcohol, drugs and relationships, then move on to more recent developments such as emails and the entire internet which all pose potential hazards such as bullying, stalking and abduction. All of these potential minefields, which in themselves can cause further problems such as low self-esteem, learning difficulties and loneliness, are caused by mental health. Youth are becoming abundantly familiar with depression, sleep disorder, anxiety, paranoia and other illness and are forced to pay more attention to their mental health. A new study has ranked mental health problems as the biggest problems worldwide facing youth today. Researches, who conducted the study, analyzed global data from around the world in 2008. They found that neuropsychiatric disorders, such as: depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and alcohol use all accounted for 45% of the diseases youth between the ages of 10 and 24 were burdened with. In author’s opinion, there are a variety of reasons for this mental health problem, such as the rising job and family stress. They have to face all kinds of problems, and they don’t have any chance to escape. The power of the stress is beyond our imaginations. Stress can affect our health in many ways, especially our mental health. Youth who are receiving education worried about their scores, their future. And the youth who are working at the company always take thought of their house, marriage and so on. We can not imagine what a difficult situation the youth who are under the heavy stress are in. Youth under the heavy stress always try every means to escape from the facts. Some of them smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol excessively, use recreational drugs and hard drugs, overeat and participate in compulsive sex. But all of these can’t totally help them get out of the trap of stress. We can see the illustration about an office lady Katrina. ‘I think that I am having an awful life at the office. I tried my best to do my job, but my hardworking, my carefulness…, all of them were useless. So I was in a pressure job and couldn’t afford to be unwell ’ ‘Stress made me become a  hypochondriac,’ says by the 46-year-old solicitor from Katrina, London. ‘They told me to take a holiday. So she can be able to cope in her job. Some time I blamed myself, I was at risk of losing my job and my dear home. This makes me feel anxiety. ’ In fact, Katrina’s health was slowly being destroyed by the stress. So youth who are always busy and don’t have the quiet time to sit by themselves usually have difficulty in releasing their stress. Youth are more comfortable intellectualizing or talking about their life rather than feeling their stress. From this, we can’t deny that stress can affect our lifestyle then our mental health. How to handle the rising stress, which becomes a horrific problem for the poor youth avoiding mental health problem? In the following paragraph, some helpful tips will be given to the youth. Develop a balance lifestyle. Having enough sleep can assure you have enough energy to cope with the tensional life. Having an inadequate nutrition contributes to a stressful life. If we want to change the life, we have to have a balance diet to absorb enough nutrition. Never try to burn out yourself. You are a people who can think, and you know that a quality life needs you to think of the pleasant things. So find the time during the day to set aside at least 15 minutes to a half hour to have a quiet period. Sit in a comfortable chair or lie down in comfortable clothes. Think of what you have done, how you did it, why you did it and what you should do. Handle your emotions. Many researches have told me the direct effect emotions have on our mental health. When you think about comfort and pleasure and feel hopeful about life, the body will change into a relaxed state. When you is angry, the body will creat stress on organs, especially the liver and pancreas. If these emotions continue for extended periods of time, mental illness may be result. Have a spiritual life. Youth need to have values and beliefs which we live by and strive to achieve. These values must be integrated into their daily life. An youth spiritual life is reflected in their relationship with themselves, people around him, and the world at large. In the final analysis the value is how the youth treat themselves and others when no one is looking and no one knows about. So if a youth wants to feel truly alive and open to life’s opportunities, they need to look carefully at their mental health. Youth need to identify the shortcomings and make changes, so that they are truly vibrating at the highest level and enjoying life to the fullest. 09英教3班 200910500073 梁洁
