nother,theconceptwillbecomearealityintheverynearfutureThechallengeistoensurethatitisaneffective,internationallyacceptablerealisationTheIoTisnowafocusfortheClusterofEuropeanResearchProjectsontheInternetofThings(CERPIoT)anditsremitistoprepareastrategicresearchagenda(CERPIoTResearchRoadmap)specificallydirectedattheIoTSotootheEuropeanfundedRealworldInternet(RWI)TheviewsofbothprojectshavebeenconsideredinrelationtotheCASAGRASfindingsandrecommendationsTheInternetofThingshasbeenviewedasa“metaphorfortheuniversalityofcommunicationprocesses,fortheintegrationofanykindofdigitaldataandcontent,fortheuniqueidentificationofrealorvirtualobjectsandforarchitecturesthatprovidethe‘communicativeglue’amongthesecomponents”RFIDisseenasameansofuniquelyidentifyingobjectsandviaRFIDinparticular,theInternetofThingsisbeingseenasthemeansofconnectingrealworlditemswithfurtherdataanddigital‘brains’andviceversa,accommodatingtoosoftwaresystemswithsensorandcontextinformationaccessedbyRFIDtagsWhatconstitutes‘digitalbrains’inthiscontextrequiresqualificationandwillundoubtedlybeviewedasacollectivetermforvaryingdegreesofprocessingcapabilityandintelligentfunctionalityIntheminimalistversionoftheInternetofThingsthesesupportedobjectsmaybeidentifiedbutdonot‘do’anythingactively,cannotcommunicateonewithanotheranddonotdisplayanylevelofintelligenceInthestrongestversion,objectsetscanbeidentifiedthatcommunicatewitheachotherexploitingthepotentialofubiquitouscomputingandubiquitousnetworksItisalsobeingseenasavehicleforachievingactuationandcontrolinrealworldapplicationsAnearlierviewoftheInternetofThings,lookingatthelikelymanifestationin,providesaspeculativeroadmapforthefutureWhileitdrawsattentiontoavarietyofwidertechnologytrendsandenablers,togetherwitharangeofprospectiveapplications,itlacksattentiontothearchitecturalframeworkforsuchanInternetItalsolacksanunderpinninganalysisoftheobjectconnectionconcepttosupporttheproposedroadmapWiththeevolvingInternetseenasasupportstructurefortheIoTsomewouldarguethattheIoTcouldbelefttoevolvenaturallyasapplicationsandsupportingtechnologydevelopSuchanapproachwouldundoubtedlyleadtoproblemsofinteroperability,scaleandfunctionality,security,privacyandofcoursegovernance,tonamebutafewTheseproblemsarealsolikelytobeexacerbatedbytheprospective,largelyautonomousnaturebeingenvisagedfortheIoT,particularlywheretheapplicationsinvolveactuation,controlandsensitivedataItseemsamoresensiblestrategytospecifyaflexibleframeworkforanIoTstructureandconstructivelycontroldevelopmentofthatstructureinordertotakeaccountofthewiderangingtechnicalandsocioeconomicfactorstobeproperlyaccommodatedThiswillrequireactiveorganisationandmanagementInconsideringthebroaderaspectsoftheframeworkitisalsoimportanttorecognisetheconceptofavirtualobjectspaceWithinthisconceptobjectsarerepresentedinelectronicvisualandrepresentationalmediaTheobjectsconcernedmaybecreatedinthisspace,derivedfromphysicalobjectspaceandindeedhaveamappedrelationshiptoobjectsinphysicalspaceDependinguponapplicationstheseobjectsmayrequirespecificaspectsofidentificationandmayindeed,insomecases,constitutepartofanidentificationprocess–forexampleabiometricimageorgraphicaltemplateMappingandidentificationmayalsohaveparticularsignificanceinsimulationstudies,andwithrespecttosingleandmultipleobjectsCasagrasFinalReportCERPIoTResearchRoadmap,DraftversionV–SeptemberRealworldInternet,http:rwifutureinterneteuimagesccRealWorldInternetPositionPapervFINALpdf<http:rwifutureinterneteuimagesccRealWorldInternetPositionPapervFINALpdf>INFSODNetworkedEnterpriseRFIDINFSOGMicroNanosystemsGroupsincooperationwiththeWorkingGroupoftheETPEPoSS–InternetofThingsin,MayFinalReportSomewouldarguethattheIoTisalreadyinbeing,basedessentiallyonislandsofapplicationsthatrelatetoobjectsbeingidentifiedandincludedinnetworkedsystemsDevelopmentsinsensoryandactuatornetworks(SANs),andparticularlywirelessandsocalled‘intelligent’sensorynetworksaddtothisviewUnfortunately,thisisonlypartoftheIoTpotentialpictureTherearemanyelementsthatcouldcontributetotherealisationofanIoTconceptandabitlikeajigsawpuzzletheyrequireputtingtogether,andintherightwaytoachieveadefinedgoalsuchastherealisationofcooperativeservicesandapplicationsTherecouldbesignificantsystembenefitsandcostefficiencyfromasynergisticcombinationofentitiesthatallowmoretobegainedfromthewholethancouldbeachievedfromthecomponentpartsThekeynoteisthatofflexibilitycombinedwithwellformulatedstrategytoallowfunctionalityandscalabilitytoevolvewiththeminimumoflegislativeconstraintoninnovationandnetworkcapability,whilstmaintainingappropriategovernanceandprotectionwithrespecttoprivacy,securityandnetworkfunctionalityInordertosuccessfullyachievethesebenefitsaproactiveapproachtoprovideamigrationstrategyisrequired,inordertoaccommodateprogressivenewtechnologies,principles,standardsandlegislationGiventhesewiderissuesconcerningtheIoTtheCASAGRASremithasbeenrevisedtoembracethesewiderconsiderationsandtospecify,ifonlyinoutline,aprogressiveframeworkforIoTrealisationWithinthiswiderconsiderationtheneedwasseenforaligningwithandcontributingtot
