ranoldwoman’skisswilldoyounoharm!”ThenhewentawayHeneverdidtellusofthemeetingtilllongafterHewasnotagreatletterwriter,and,besides,hethoughtmyfathermightnotwishtohavetheflirtationsofhisyouthbroughtupagainsthimSowelittleknew!ButitseemsthatthedaughterandsoninlawwerejustasmuchamazedasBertram,andwhenhewasgone,andthepooroldladysankintoherchairandburstoutcrying,andastheycameandaskedwhoorwhatthiswas,shesobbedout,“YourbrotherHester!Oh!solikehimmyhusband!”orsomethingtothateffect,asunawaresShewantedtotakeitbackagain,butofcourseHesterwouldnotlether,andmadehertellthewholeItseemsthathernamewasFaithLeBlancshewashalfEnglish,halfFrenchCanadian,andlivedinavillageinaveryunsettledpart,whereCaptainTrevorusedtocometohunt,andwherehemadelovetoher,andendedbymarryingherwiththeknowledgeofherfamilyandhisbrotherofficers,butnotofhisfamilyjustbeforehewasorderedtotheLakefrontierThewarhadstirreduptheIndianstoactsofviolencetheyhadnotcommittedformanyyears,andatribeofthemcamedownonthevillage,plundering,burning,killing,andtorturingthosewhomtheyhadknowninfriendlyintercourseFaithLeBlanchadoncegivensomemilktoapapooseuponitsmother’sback,andperhapsforthisreasonshewasLadyHesterspared,buteveryonebelongingtoherwas,shebelieved,destroyed,andshewascarriedawaybythetribe,whowantedtomakeheroneofthemselvesandsheknewthatifsheoffendedthem,suchhorrorsasshehadseenpractisedonotherswouldcomeonherHowever,theyhadgonetoanotherresortoftheirs,wheretherewasayounghunterwhooftenvisitedthem,andwasonfriendlytermsWhenhefoundthattherewasawhitewomanlivingasacaptiveamongthem,hesparednoefforttorescueherBothheandshewereofteninexceedingdangerbuthecontrivedherescapeatlast,andbroughtherthroughthewoodstoaplaceofsafety,andthereherchildwasbornItwasovertheAmericanfrontier,anditwaslongbeforeshecouldwritetoherhusbandSheneverknewwhatbecameofherletter,butthehunterfriend,PiersDayman,showedheranAmericanpaperwhichmentionedCaptainTrevoramongtheofficerskilledintheirattackDaymanwasdevotedtoher,andinsistedonmarryingher,andbringingupherdaughterashisownIfancyshewasawomanofgentlepassivetemper,andhadbeencrushedandterrifiedbyallshehadgonethrough,soastohavelittleinstinctleftbutthatofclingingtotheprotectorwhohadtakenherupwhenshehadlosteverythingelseandshemarriedhimNordidHesterguesstillthatverydaythatPiersDaymanwasnotherfather!Therewereotherchildren,sonswhohavegiventhemselvestohuntingandtrappingintheHudson’sBayCompany’sterritorybutHesterremainedtheonlydaughter,andtheyeducatedherwell,sendinghertoaconventatMontreal,whereshelearntagoodmanyaccomplishmentsTheywerenotRomanCatholicsbutitwastheonlywayofgettinganeducationDaymanmusthavebeenawarmhearted,tenderlyaffectionatepersonHesterlovedhimverymuchButhehadlivedawildsportsman’slife,andneverwashappyatrestTheychangedhomeoftenandatlasthewassnowedupandfrozentodeath,withoneofhisboys,onabearhuntingexpeditionNotverylongafter,HestermarriedthissturdyAmerican,JoelLea,whohadboughtsomelandontheCanadiansideoftheborder,andhermothercamehometolivewiththemTheyhadbeenmarriedfourorfiveyears,butnoneoftheirchildrenhadlivedCharlotteMYongeSoitwaswhenthediscoverycameuponpooroldMrsDayman(Idonotknowwhatelsetocallher),thatFulkTorwoodTrevor,thehusbandofheryouth,wasnotdead,butwasEarlofTrevorshammarried,andthefatheroffourchildreninEnglandPooroldthing!Shewouldhaveburiedhersecrettothelast,asmuchinpityandlovetohimasinshameandgriefforherselfandconsideration,too,forthesons,forwhomthediscoverywasonlylessbadthanforus,astheyhadlesstoloseHesterherselfhardlyfullyunderstoodwhatitallinvolved,anditonlygraduallygrewonherThatwinterhermotherfellill,andMrLeafeltitrightthatthesmallpropertyshehadhadforherlifeshouldbeproperlysecuredtohersons,accordingtothedivisiontheirfatherhadintendedSoalawyerwasbroughtfromMontrealandherwillwasmadeThusanotherpersonknewaboutit,andhewasmuchstruck,andexplainedtoHesterthatshewasreallyaladyofrank,andprobablytheonlychildofherfatherwhohadanylegalclaimtohisestatesLea,withagooddealoftheoldAmericanRepublicantemper,wouldnotbestirredupHedespisedlordsandladies,andwouldnoneofitbutthelawyerheldthatitwouldbedoingwrongnottopreservetherecordHesterhadgrownexcited,andsecondedhimandoneday,whenLeawasout,thelawyerbroughtamagistratetotakeMrsDayman’saffidavitastoallherpasthistorymarriagewitnessesandallShewasagooddealovercomeandagitated,andquiteimploredHesternevertousetheknowledgeagainstherfatherbutshemusthavebeenalwaysapassive,docilebeing,andtheymadehertellallthatwaswanted,andsignherdeposition,asshehadsignedherwill,asFaithTrevor,commonlyknownasFaithDaymanShedidnotlivemanydaysafterItwasontherdofFebruary,,thatshediedandinthecourseofthesummerHesterhadason,whothroveasnoneofherbabieshaddoneThenshelayandbroodedoverhimandtherightsshefanciedhewasdeprivedof,tillsheworkedherselfuptoastrongandfixedpurpose,andinsisteduponmakingallknowntoherfatherNowthathermotherwasgoneshepersuadedherselfthathehadbeenacruel,faithlesstyrant,whohadwilfullydesertedhisyoungwifeJoelLeawouldnotlistentoherWhyshouldshewishtomakehissonagoodfornothingEnglishlordThatwashisLadyHesterviewNothingbutmisery,distress,andtemptationcouldcomeofnotletting
