But at just seven years old, Alma Deutscher has already composed her own. The talented youngster has become a classical music sensation after her first major composition was highly commended by the English National Opera. And not only is Alma an accomplished composer, she is also a skilled violinist and pianist. Alma wrote her own sonata (奏呜曲) at the age of six, followed by her opera, The Sweeper of Dreams, this year. She said: "The music comes to me when I'm relaxing. I go and sit down on a seat or lie down. I like thinking about fairies a lot, and princesses, and beautiful dresses.” She added that her best compositions are created when she is on the swing in the garden at her home in Dorking, Surrey, but she keeps a tape recorder by her bed for when inspiration strikes. The idea for The Sweeper of Dreams - which narrowly missed out on a place in the final of an English National Opera contest for adult composers - came in a dream. Alma's father Guy, an Israeli-born linguist and amateur flautist(长笛演奏者), said he realized his daughter had a connection with music when she was a baby. She was given her first violin for her third birthday and in less than a year she was playing Handel sonatas. In addition to weekly piano and violin lessons, she is taught at home, and practices and composes for between four and five hours a day. But her parents refuse to let her take part in competitions or music exams, and have turned down invitations to appear on television shows.Mr.Deutscher added: "She works hard but she has a very happy childhood and we are absolutely determined to protect this.” "I don't mind if I am famous or not, I just want to be good:' she added "I look at other composers but I'm not trying to become exactly like Mozart.Yeah, I like him, but I'm going to be like Alma not Mozart " 56. B In today’s uncertain economic times, understanding money matters is more important than ever. But America’s education system is not doing a good job of teaching financial literacy (财务知识). The inventors of a board game called Nest Egg hope their approach can get high school students off on the right financial foot. Most of the 13 New York City high school kids who recently gathered around a table to play Nest Egg had never thought about personal finance before. Erin Kanter, head of marketing for Nest Egg, acts as the banker during the game. The kids form small teams and each team acts as a financial advisor for an imaginary young couple that wants to buy a home or set up a college fund for their child. It’s up to the players to help them build their savings for the future and achieve those goals. A roll of the dice (骰子) can bring an unexpected piece of good fortune or a disaster. In New York, the Department of Youth and Community Development is experimenting with the game. If today’s experiment goes well, Nest Egg could be played in after-school community centers and possibly in high schools later on. Osorio and his colleagues say poor money management is at least part of the reason for this statistic: 40 percent of New York City public school graduates who go on to one of the city’s colleges drop out within two years. Nest Egg has already been introduced into the high school curriculum 3, 000 kilometers away in Corpus Christi, Texas. Carol Loeb teaches economics at King High School and says it used to be hard to get her students to grasp concepts they had no experience with. But that all changed with Nest Egg. She recalls one student who was failing when his class started playing the game. “That was the first time the whole semester this kid had come alive, ” Loeb says. “He could not wait to get in the classroom. He came in and told me what he had thought about the night before, what he wanted to do, what he wanted to invest in, and he was totally, totally engaged. ” 61. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth. On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. In the 18th and 19th centuries, although newspapers were common, letters continued to be the primary source of information on politics, social conditions, and even natural disasters. A series of innovations, including the invention of the lead pencil in the 18th century and the steady reduction of postal rates in the 19th century, affected not only the length and content of letters, but the frequency with which they were sent. But few developments changed written communication as much as the introduction of a simple product that created a national fashion at the turn of the 20th century: the postcard. Postcards were first developed in the 1870s as promotional advertisements for hotels, resorts (度假胜地),and other businesses. In 1906, the United States Congress passed legislation allowing messages to be written on one half of the back side of postcards, in effect encouraging people to substitute them for short letters. From that point on, the use of postcards rose steadily, from about 770 million that year to almost 1 billion three years later. Manufacturers sprang up to meet the demand. By 1909, the Illustrated Postcard Company alone was producing three million a day. Postcards were _________ a means of communication. Like stamps, they became collector's items to be bought, sold, and traded. Many people used postcards to acknowledge the receipt(收据)of letters and to promise a quick response. They also became a means for travelers to update friends and family on how a trip was progressing. But postcards also had an important effect on how people corresponded.
