TheLiteratureReviewofABriefAnalysisofChineseDisasterReportinginNewYorkTimesfromthePerspectiveofSystematicFunctionalGrammarThestcenturyhaswitnessedthefastdevelopmentofmassmedia,fromtheprevailingnewspapertotheboomingInternetAlongwiththerapiddevelopmentofinformationnetworkandcommunicationtechnology,massmediaisplayinganincreasinglyimportantroleinpeople’slivesinmodernsocietyAsanimportantmeansofcommunicationandaparticulartypeofmediadiscourse,newsreportservesasthesourceofinformation,entertainmentandenrichmentoftheculturallivesofpeople,andsubtlyinfluencesandchangespeople’scognition,behaviorandvaluesAlmosteveryday,moreorless,peopleareexposedtonewsmedia,influencedbynewsmedia,evenrelyonnewsmediaAsvanDijkpointsoutthatmediadiscourseisthemainsourceofpeople’sknowledge,attitudesandideologies,bothofelitesaswellasofordinarycitizens(VanDijk,a,p)WhattheauthorwantstouncoverinthisthesisistheunderlyingideologyhiddenindisasternewsdiscoursethroughacasestudyofdisasternewsreportsfromNYTwithHalliday’sSystematicFunctionalGrammarasitsframeworkTherearefourmainreasonsforbeinginterestedinstudyingmediadiscourse:Firstly,mediaisarichsourceofreadilyaccessibledataforresearchandteachingSecondly,mediausageinfluencesandrepresentspeople’suseofandattitudestowardslanguageinaspeechcommunityThirdly(andrelated),mediausecantellusagreatdealaboutsocialmeaningsandstereotypesprojectedthroughlanguageandcommunicationFourthly(andagainrelated),mediareflectsandinfluencestheformationandexpressionofculture,politicsandsociallife(BellGarrett,,p,)Whatalltheseshowsthatmediafunctionsnotonlyasprovidersofinformation,butalsoashaperofperceptionOverviewofNewsDiscourseStudyAbroadTheearlystudiesofnews,justasVanDijkmentioned,arecharacterizedbyanecdote(VanDijk,,p)AmongthosestudiesjournalistsoftennarratetheirownexperiencetoprovidenewsmediawithwellintentionedadviceandsharpcriticismThetypicalapproachtheyadoptediscasestudyIntheearlythcentury,manyanalystsstartedtoshowgreatinterestsinnewsdiscourseandmadeinitialexplorationsintonewsfromthestylisticperspectiveCrystalandDavy(,p)describejournalisticdiscoursefromthelinguisticperspectiveandsummarizestylisticfeaturesofnewsdiscourseHowever,theydonotattempttocharacterizethefunctionalityofnewsdiscourseortodiscoveranydeepersociosemioticprinciplesthatthesefeaturesmightserveBrook()alsoattachattentiontothenewsreportandcontributetothestylisticstudyofnewsVanDijk(a)exploresthestructuresandlinguisticfeaturesofnewsinamoresystematicandcomprehensivewayHedividesthenewsdiscourseintotwoparts,thesummary(theheadlineandthelead)andthenewsdiscourse(episodesandcomments)Healsopointsoutthatthenewsisconductedinasociologicalperspectivewhichconsistsoftwoorientations(macrosociologicalandmicrosociologicalperspective)VanDijkadvancesthedevelopmentofcriticalnewsanalysisbyhiscomprehensivestudiesandpublishedworksSincethelates,heorientshisattentiontothestudyofmediadiscourse,offeringhisownreflectiononmassmediacommunication(VanDijk,,p)Recently,hefocusesonexploringtherelationsbetweenpower,languageandideologyinnewsdiscourseandthestudyofracismindiscourse(VanDijk,a)Inhisworksofnewsdiscourse,heattemptstoexplicatethatnewsreportsthemselvesaswellasthereaders’understandingofthenewsreportsneedtobeinvestigatedasdynamicprocessesinsteadoftakingnewsdiscourseastheendproductFairclough()constructsasocialtheoryofdiscourseandprovidesamethodologicalblueprintforcriticaldiscoursestudyinpracticeFaircloughdividesdiscourseintothreedimensions:texts,interactionsandcontextsAsfornewsdiscourse,textsrefertothenewsreportswereadinnewspapersInteractionsinvolvetheproductionandconsumptionofnewsreportsandcontextsrefertothebackgroundoftheeventsreported,thesituationalandsocialrealityCorrespondingtothethreedimensionsofdiscourse,FaircloughproposesastepwiseprocedureinconductingcriticaldiscourseanalysisDescriptionisthestagewhichisconcernedwithformalpropertiesofthetextlinguisticfeaturesofvocabulary,grammar,textualstructures,areanalyzedbymeansoffunctionalgrammarsuchastransitivity,modality,themes,etcInterpretationisconcernedwiththerelationshipbetweentextandinteractionwithseeingthetextastheproductofaprocessofproduction,andasaresourceintheprocessofinterpretationInnewsdiscourse,theinterpretationstagewilldealwiththeintertextualphenomenaofnewsproductionfromtheperspectiveofnewssources,speechreporting,etcExplanationisconcernedwiththerelationshipbetweeninteractionandthesocialcontextwiththefocusonsocialdeterminationoftheprocessesofproductionandinterpretation,andtheirsocialeffectsTheanalysisatthisstageturnstothebroadersociopoliticalandhistoricalcontextsAsfornewsdiscourse,thehiddenideologyaswellasitsrelationshipwithlanguageuseisunmaskedatthisstageThesocialandculturaldeterminants,newsvaluesandthesubjectpositionofthenewsreaderswillbediscussedThisthreestepprocedureiswidelyadoptedastheframeworkofcriticalnewsdiscourseanalysisHisstudyintendstoincreasenewsreaders’criticalawarenesstostruggleforsocialemancipationOverviewofNewsDiscourseStudyHomeIncomparisonwiththeabovementionedfruitfulachievementsabroad,thenewsdiscoursestudyfromappliedlinguisticperspectiveinChina,however,isrelativelylimitedTheinitialstudiesonnewsdiscourseinChinaaremainlyrestrictedtothestylisticfeaturesofnewsbasedontraditionalrhetoricandliterarystylisticsThenewsstylisticstudiesinthelatesmainlyconcernthelanguagefeaturesofthesurfacestructuresuchasatphonetic,lexicalandsyntacticallevelsTheseanalysespaylittleattentiontothesocioculturalelementsinthenewsreportsForinstance,ChenHuaijie()summariesthestylisticcharacteristicsofAmericanSpecialEnglishnewsreportsuchasdirectness,concisenessandfluency,etcWangZuoliangandDingWangdao(),intheirmonographIntroductiontoEnglishStylisticsintroducethestylisticfeaturesofnewsreportfromtheperspectivesofvocabulary,sentenceanddiscoursestructuresHuangWeihe()analyzestheheadline,theleadandthebodyofthenewsreporttosummarizethestylisticfeaturesofthelanguageHisstudycoverslexicalgrammaticalandrhetoricallevelsandtheanalysesoftextualstructuresarealsoconcernedItexplicatesthestylisticfeaturesofnewsreportcomprehensivelyandmakesagreatprogressonanalysisofsentencepatternandtextstructureofthewholenewsbodyTheirstudyislimitedtotheanalysisofformalismwithoutconcerningthefunctionalelementshiddenbehindthefeaturesItneglectstheimportantfactthatbothourperceptionandinterpretationofcommunicationaleventsareheavilyinfluencedbysituational,experiential,emotionalandsocialfactorsUndertheinfluenceofHalliday’ssystematicfunctionalgrammar,newsstylisticstudyorientsfromtheanalysisofstylisticfeaturestomultidimensionalstudysuchaslinguisticgenreanalysisandregisteranalysisManyresearchersappliedsystematicfunctionalgrammartoanalyzethespecificnewsdiscourseasagenreTheyalldostylisticresearchonnewsreportingandexplorethespecificfeaturesofthestyleofnewsZhangDeluemploysHalliday’sfunctionalgrammartheorytoanalyzesituationalelementsinnewsreportandsemanticstructure,discoursestructure,lexicalandphoneticcharacteristics,aswellassyntacticfeaturesatsententiallevelHisstudyexploresstylisticfeaturesofnewsreportbymeansoffunctionalstylisticsmoresystematicallyandcomprehensivelyGuoHong()adoptsthetheoryofregisterinSFGtoanalyzethestylisticfeaturesatphonetic,lexical,syntacticalanddiscourselevelsChenZhongzhu()isoneoftheearlyscholarswhointroduceCriticalLinguisticsintoChinaHeintroducesthephilosophicalandlinguisticbackgroundofCriticalLinguistics,itsdevelopment,itsopinionsonlanguage,discourse,contextandideologyaswellasitslinguisticanalyticaltoolsHemakesacommentaryoncriticaldiscourseanalysisandemploysHalliday’sthreemetafunctionstheorytocriticallyanalyzenewsdiscoursesfromnewspapersofdifferentpoliticalstandingsXinBinisaprominentscholarincriticaldiscourseanalysisathomeHispaperscovernotonlythetheoreticaloriginanddevelopmentofcriticallinguisticsbutalsotheapplicationstotheauthenticdiscoursecasestoshowhowlanguage,powerandideologyperformandrelateindifferentdiscoursesDengandZhao()probesintotheactualityanddevelopmentofthenewsaboutdisastersfromperceive,reporting,writingand,soonShealsoscansandthinksaboutthevalueofthenewsaboutdisaster,thequalityofthereporters,theimportanceoftheinterviewingconditionandthestyleofthewritingAtthesametime,itspeciallytalksaboutandemphasizetheviewthatpayattentiontothementalofthevictimsandthesystemofthepreparationreportingdisastersaswellastheregularity,rulesandmethodofthenewsofdisastersoastopersistintheidealofnewsandemphasizetheimportanceofthedisastersthemselvesZhang,ZhangandLi()focusonhowlinguisticstructuresindisasternewsleadachievenewsvalueandhownewsvalueisreflectedthroughthelinguisticstructuresAllthesamplesinthisthesisaretakenfromtheNYTfrontpagenewsandthesubjectisrestrictedinthefieldofdisasternewsreportsTheauthorcollectedallthenewsleadsaboutHurricaneKatrinaandSouthAsiaearthquakefromNYT’frontwithaspanoffifteendaysafterthebreakoutoftheverydisasterMeanwhile,reportingdisasternewsproperlyandcautiouslyisanotherprincipleForthenewsmedia,itshouldobservemacrosituation,payattentiontospreadingenvironmenttostriveforthebestsocialeffectBesides,itshouldalsoavoidcarryingthecontentthatstimulatesreaders’sensoryorgantopursuestirringeffectReferences参考文献不应少于条参考文献应按英文个字母的顺序排列先列外文文献后列中文文献中文用宋体小四外文用TimesNewRoman小四。期刊论文标记为J专著为M论文集为C论文集收录的论文为A博士论文为D词典为Z。参考文献例如:Bell,A()TheLanguageofNewsMediaOxford:BlackwellBrook,Cal()VarietiesofEnglish(nded)London:MacmillanPressCrystal,David,Davy,Derek()InvestingEnglishStyleLondon:HarlowLongmanFairclough,N()CriticalDiscourseAnalysis:TheCriticalStudyofLanguageLondonNewYork:LongmanFairclough,N()MediaDiscourseLondon:EdwardArnoldFowler,R()LanguageandControlLondon:RoutledgeandKeeganPaulFowler,R()LanguageintheNews:DiscourseandIdeologyinthePressLondon:RoutledgeHalliday,MAK()AnIntroductiontoFunctionalGrammar(nded)Beijing:ForeignLanguageTeachingandResearchPressHodge,R,Kress,Gunther()LanguageasIdeologyLondon:RoutledgeLeech,GeoffreyN,Short,MichaelH()StyleinFiction北京:外语教学与研究出版社LongmanDictionaryofContemporaryEnglish()(thed)北京:商务印书馆VanDijk,TA()HandbookofDiscourseAnalysisNewYork:AcademicPressVanDijk,TA()Ideology:AMultidisciplinaryApproachLondon:SagePublications陈怀杰美国之音特别新闻报道的特点解放军外国语学院学报():戴炜华,高军批评语篇分析:理论评述和实例分析外国语():邓利平,赵淑雯从灾害新闻的传播看
