The CD contains the following: • Indy R2000 software files: o Indy R2000 firmware binary file o Indy R2000 host software binary files (Windows XP, and Windows CE versions) o Indy RFID Tracer Application binary files. For full details, see the Indy RFID Tracer Application User Guide. o IndyTool application. This application is a GUI based tool that allows for finer control of the MAC firmware. • Entire product documentation set: o Indy R2000 Datasheet o Indy Firmware Datasheet o Indy Firmware Interface Specification o Indy R2000 Quick Start Guide o Indy RFID Reader SDK Getting Started Guide o Indy Firmware Release Notes o Indy RFID Tracer User Guide o IndyTool User Guide • Indy R2000 Development Platform design collateral: o Base board and interface board schematics o Base board and interface board Gerber’s Note: To use the Indy R2000 Development Platform, users must supply the following components: 1. A Host platform. For the remainder of this document, the host platform is assumed to be an IA-32 (a.k.a., Pentium)-based PC running Windows XP (SP1 or later). However, other host platforms are possible. For details, see the Indy Host Library SDK Getting Started Guide. 2. RFID ready antenna cable(s) 3. RFID ready antenna(s) 4. One or more ISO 18000-6C Gen 2 Tags Indy® R2000 Development Platform—Quick Start Guide Revision 1, Copyright © 2010, Impinj, Inc. 7 5. 2 Reading Tags with the Indy R2000 Development Platform This section describes the procedure for getting the Indy R2000 Development Platform up and running to read tags. Notes: • The Indy R2000 Development Platform will default to FCC mode, regardless if the platform hardware is targeted for FCC or ETSI compliant regions. Please consult with your regulatory advisor to ensure you have the correct licences in place to broadcast in the FCC or ETSI spectrum. For information about configuring the Indy R2000 Development Platform to ETSI mode, see the Indy RFID Tracer User Guide, or the IndyTool User Guide. • All computer boards are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Handle all static-sensitive boards and components at a static-safe work area, and observe anti-static precautions at all times. • The Indy R2000 Development Platform ships with the Indy R2000 Firmware in persistent storage on the platform. No loading of the firmware is required in order to get the platform to read tags. • The Indy R2000 Development Platform default register setting values allow tags to be read out of the box. • Do not apply power to the system until the TX antenna ports have been terminated either by an antenna or a termination connector. To install, configure, and power the R2000 development platform: 1. Install the following components from the Indy R2000 Collateral CD on the host: a. Indy RFID Tracer application. See IN_UG_IPJ_Indy_Tracer_v2_3_0_User_Guide_20100622_R1.pdf for details about how to install and launch this application. b. IndyTool application, See IN_UG_IPJ_Indy_IndyTool_v2_3_0_User_Guide_20100624_R1.pdf for details about how to install and launch this application. c. Indy R2000 USB Bus Driver for Windows XP. See Indy R2000 SDK Getting Started Guide for details about how to install the driver. 2. Connect the components as depicted in the Figure 6. a. You will need to connect an antenna to the ANT0 location and supply a Gen 2 tag. The antenna pictured here is an Impinj Mini-Guardrail antenna. Indy® R2000 Development Platform—Quick Start Guide 8 Revision 1, Copyright © 2010, Impinj, Inc Figure 6 Component connections (using USB) Note: Ensure that the tag is stationary, and depending on the type of antenna and tag, that it can be placed at the proper distance. In our example above, a near field tag is taped to an Impinj Mini-Guardrail antenna . The goal is to verify correct setup rather than to exercise the Indy R2000 read range or rate. 3. Adjust the antenna configuration, if necessary. The Indy R2000 development platform is by default configured for a monostatic antenna configuration (i.e., a single antenna is used for the Rx and Tx paths). Refer to the Indy R2000 Development Platform Operation for more information about how to configure it to a bistatic configuration (i.e., dual Rx/Tx antenna). 4. If you haven’t already, apply +24V power to the Indy R2000 Development Platform, and then connect the USB cable to your host platform (PC). At this point, Windows XP detects the platform and displays the Found New Hardware Wizard. a. The first screen asks if Windows can connect to Windows Update to search for the software. Select No, not this time, and then click NEXT button. b. On the next screen, select Install from a list of specific locations, and then click NEXT. c. On the next screen: i. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. ii. Deselect Search removable media. iii. Select the include this location in the search option, and then use the browse button to select the path where the USB driver files, usbharve.sys and usbharve.inf, are located. d. A dialog box appears indicating that the driver has not passed Windows Logo Testing. Click CONTINUE ANYWAY. Indy® R2000 Development Platform—Quick Start Guide Revision 1, Copyright © 2010, Impinj, Inc. 9 Note: If you are prompted again for a .sys file on an installation disk, use the browse button to locate the driver file again. e. When the last screen appears, click Finish to dismiss the New Hardware Wizard. 5. Launch Indy Tracer Application by selecting Start → Programs → IMPINJ → Impinj Tracer v2.3.0 Æ Tracer. Indy® R2000 Development Platform—Quick Start Guide 10 Revision 1, Copyright © 2010, Impinj, Inc 6. Execute an Inventory Once command from the Indy RFID Tracer application, and verify that the tag data for the tag in the field of view of the antenna is returned to the Tracer main window. See the Indy RFID Tracer User Guide for details about how to operate the Indy RFID Tracer application. Figure 7 Example of one tag being captured by Indy RFID Tracer 7. Now verify that IndyTool works as well. Exit the Tracer application and launch IndyTool. 8. Launch IndyTool by selecting Start → Programs → IMPINJ → Impinj IndyTool v2.3.0 Æ IndyTool. Indy® R2000 Development Platform—Quick Start Guide Revision 1, Copyright © 2010, Impinj, Inc. 11 9. Connect to the device and go to the Inventory Tab and click start. You should see the same tag data as you saw from Tracer, see Figure 8. Figure 8 Verifying Platform Operation The R2000 Development platform is now verified to be functional and you can proceed forward with your evaluation. Indy® R2000 Development Platform—Quick Start Guide 12 Revision 1, Copyright © 2010, Impinj, Inc 3 Changing the Host Interface from USB to UART The Indy R2000 Development Platform can be operated over USB or UART. The most straight-forward method to switch to using the UART interface is to connect an RS232 cable to the CONSOLE port of the R2000 platform. Then launch IndyTool and follow the directions below. 1. Open the file RFIDcomm.cfg. If this file does not exist, you must create one. 2. Change the number “1” to the actual COM port you would like to use. 3. Copy this file into the directory from which the Tracer or IndyTool application will run. To locate the Tracer application executable use Explorer to view the directory: C:\Program Files\IMPINJ\Impinj Tracer v2.3.0\ 4. With IndyTool, go to the Macros tab and choose the “Interface_To_UART” from the drop down menu and then click execute. Figure 9 Select the option to be performed from the drop down menu in the Macros tab, then execute. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Start Tracer and/or IndyTool. Now verify that you can connect to the device properly.
