Chinese wine China is one of the Four Ancient Civilizations. It boasts a vast geographic expanse, 3,600 years of written history, as well as a rich and profound culture. Many aspects of Chinese culture can be traced back many centuries ago. Chinese wine culture has a long history longer than Chinese tea culture. In 1986. a pot of wine excavated in Henan Province was found to have been made more than 3,000 years ago. China has many famous brands of wine——Maotai, Five-Grain liquor, Fen Liquor, Bamboo-Leaf-Green Liqueur, Luzhou Liquor, Gujing Tribute Wine, Rice Wine, Zhangyu Grape Wine, and Grape Wine of the Great Wall——that enjoy a worldwide reputation. Unlike western wine, Chinese wine was made of rice, millet and other grains, as well as herbs and flowers. A wide variety of tonic wines are made with traditional ingredient. The popular rice-based Yellow Wine, is best served warm.. There are many stories about wine in Chinese history. Tao Yuanming, a poet in the Jin dynasty, could not live without wine for a day. The great poet Li Bai in the Tang Dynasty, could “write 100 poems after drinking wine”, the more wine he drunk, the better the poem would be. Wu Song, a brave man from Liangshan in the Song Dynasty, drank 18 bowls of wine without a break, and then, barehanded, fought a fierce tiger to the death. At the every beginning, alcohol was mainly a beverage in the ceremonial rites. The drinking game Jiuling Called in Chinese, were just aimed at drinking. Besides, in different historical stage, according to the development of social economy and the technique of making, people use different drinking vessels. At the 1915 Panama World Exposition, China want to display Maotai, but the American organizers dislike the yellow porcelain bottle and refused to allow the spirit to be displayed. The Chinese delegation was very angry. As they were quarrelling strongly, a clever Chinese delegate dropped a bottle of Maotai on the ground. The spirit was spoilt immediately as the bottle was broken, and soon the whole room was filled with a exceptional fragrance. Delegates of all countries were attracted and amazed by the fantastic smell of the wine. Finally, Maotai was appraised as a “World Famous Brand”, winning a golden medal. Chinese wine culture is an important part of Chinese traditional culture, as a Chinese, everyone should a learn something about Chinese wine culture.
