第三部分:阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 50 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中选出最佳选项。
A
Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe
finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had
run into a very difficult problem: it seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around
the needle.
Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He
dreamt the he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him
unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same
problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage
and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But
suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor
awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of
trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the
center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first
really practiced sewing machine.
Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light lamp, said his best ideas came into him in
dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in
writing Jane Eyre.
To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep.
Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part
understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It
stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only
when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are
awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images(图像) which
the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “ secret
messages to ourselves”.

C. the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked

A superstition is a belief people hold, which is not based on reason. There is no logic to
superstition. These beliefs often go against the laws of nature as we know them. People who have
superstitions, or who are superstitious, believe that they can either bring themselves good luck or
keep away from bad luck of disasters(灾难) by acting in certain ways. An example of this
involves(包含) salt. When some people spill(泼酒) salt, they immediately take some of it and
throw it over their left shoulder. In this way, they feel they keep away from bad luck.
Why do people believe in superstitions? How did they begin to think that they could control
their luck?
We read earlier about some of the Greek, Homan, and Norse gods. People in ancient times
believed that these gods controlled their lives and all of nature. They tried to keep their gods
happy by giving them gifts. When there were natural disasters, people thought that the gods were
angry with them, so they tried to make the gods happy again. This is how we got the idea that we
could affect our fate by certain actions.
Many superstitions have been held by people for centuries. Yet there is little need for them
today, since people in most parts of the world don’t believe that there are a lot of gods. We no
longer try to make the gods happy with gifts or to keep them from anger with certain actions.
Somehow, however, many of the actions continue in modern times. We still have our superstitions.

A. they could control the laws of nature
B. a superstition was not based on reason
C. if they made their gods angry, they would suffer from disasters
D. they must regularly throw some salt away
61. People who have superstitions _____.
A. believe natural disasters have nothing to do with gods
B. don’t believe that the supernatural exists
C. think they could affect their fortune by acting in certain ways
D. believe the laws of nature

A. Everybody has some superstitions.
B. We should make the gods happy with gifts.
C. If we act in certain ways, we can escape our bad luck.
D. Although most of us no longer believe in the gods, some superstitions still continue today.
63. The passage mainly tells us that _____.
A. there is some logic to superstitions
5
B. we must do away with all superstitions
C. superstitions came from the belief in the gods
D. man should control his fortune by himself

Wind, water, fire and ice — these powerful natural forces have shaped the land of America in
the past. They are still changing it today.
The Colorado River slowly cut down through stone to make the Grand Canyon.
Long ago, ice sheets cut Yosemite Valley and the Great Lakes, and glaciers(冰川) are still on
the move in Alaska.
Wind and rain storm hit the land from time to time. Fires sometimes burn down forests and
destroy the homes of wild animals: This happened in Yellowstone Park in 1988.
Dead volcanic mountains such as Haleakala on Maui and Crater Lakein Oregon are beautiful
to look at. But there are several active volcanoes in the US, especially along the Pacific Coast.
There are also many earthquakes in this area. Scientists can do nothing to control earthquakes or
volcanoes. This was shown clearly on May 18, 1980. At 8:32 that morning, Mount St. Helens in
Washington state broke out. The top of the mountain was blown off.
Over 60 people-campers, scientists, journalists, forest workers were killed. Hundreds of
square miles of forests were knocked down. In towns over 100 miles away, day suddenly became
night. An ash cloud hid the sun for many hours. Towns and fields in Washington, Oregon, and
Idaho were covered with dirty gray ash.
Scientists knew that Mt St. Helens might erupt(爆发) soon. But no one could say when. And
no one expected the terrible strength of the eruption. Many people were surprised and unready.
Harry R. Truman, 84, owed a small hotel in Mt St. Helens. Scientists had asked to move away
because the volcano was becoming dangerous.
But Harry Truman would not leave his home. Now it is covered with many feet of dirty ash.
A small cross stands above the place where Harry probably died. Perhaps it is better than he did
not see the destruction of Mt St. Helens, the once beautiful lake, and the forests.
But slowly; life is returning to the dead area around the mountain. Grass and small plants are
becoming to grow again. Deer and birds have been seen. The land will never be the same as it
once was. Perhaps Mt St. Helens will erupt again. But this is all part of nature’s pattern of change,
and man has little power to control it.
64. Choose the best title for this passage.
A. Wind, water, fire and ice.
B. Volcano’s beauty and danger.

6
A. Washington and Oregon are neighboring states
B. the Colorado River runs through Yosemite Valley
C. the eruption of Mt St. Helens also caused trouble with the Yellowstone Park
D. scientists never knew Mt St. Helens was active

Although man has known about asbestos for many hundreds of years, it was not until 160
years ago that it was mined for the first time on the North American continent. H. W. Johns, owner
of a New York City Supply Shop for roofers, was responsible (负责) for the opening of that first
mine.
Mr. Johns was given a piece of asbestos, which had been found in Italy. He experimented
with the material and then showed its surprising power to his customers. After putting on a pair of
asbestos gloves, which looked much like ordinary work gloves, he took red-hot coals from the
fireplace and played with them in his hands. How astonished the customers were to discover that
he was not burned at all. You can well imagine that he had increasing business in asbestos roofing
materials. However, because it was very expensive to transport(carry) them from Italy to the
United States, Mr. Johns sent out a young scientist to seek a source nearer home. This young man
found great vein(岩脉) in the province of Quebec in Canada.
Ever since 1881 Quebec has led the world in the production of this unusual mineral, which is
made up of magnesium, silicon, iron, and oxygen. When it is mined, the asbestos is heavy, just as
you would expect a mineral to be. When it is separated, a strange thing happens: the rock breaks
down into fine, soft, soapy fibres.
Scientists do not know why the rock can be separated easily into threads, but they have found
thousands of uses for this fireproof material, often called “ the cloth of stone”.

A. It is like thread.
B. It feels soapy.
C. It burns easily.
D. It is unusually heavy.
