2 2. What is the database character set used for and how is it set? The database character set is specified when the database is created and is stored in the data dictionary table, sys.props$. It is used to determine which characters can be stored in the database. It is also used to determine the character set to be used for object identifiers and PL/SQL variables and for storing PL/SQL program source. 3. What is the client character set used for and how is it set? The client character set used for Oracle should be equivalent to the character set supported for your terminal. This character set should also be equivalent to or a subset of the character set used for your database so that every character input through the terminal has a matching character to map to in the database. It is set by the environment variable NLS_LANG. This has the format: LANGUAGE_TERRITORY.CHARACTERSET and is set as a local environment variable in Unix, or in the registry on a PC running Windows NT. All 16 bit applications (NT/95 or Windows 3.11) set NLS_LANG in the oracle.ini. 4. What does the language part of NLS_LANG control? The language of messages, of day and month names and the default sort sequence. The language specifies default values for territory and character set so if language is specified then the other two arguments can be omitted. 5. What does the territory part of NLS_LANG control? The default date format, the decimal character and group separator, the local currency symbol and the week start day. 6. How can I make sure that non-English characters are displayed? a. create your database with a character set which includes the characters you want to display. b. make sure that your terminal's character set (env variable LANG) includes the characters you want to display. c. set NLS_LANG to include the Oracle name for your client character set.
