semillionsofyoungpeoplehaveaspirationsthatneedtobefulfilled,andtheregimesinplacerightnowshowlittleabilitytodosoTheprotesters'demandshavebeendismissedbytheregimesasbeingforIslamicfundamentalismoraproductofWesterninterferenceButplainlythesearehomegrownproteststhathaveoftenmadetheWestuneasyastheyhaveshakenupoldalliancesAndwhattheprotesterswantinthefirstplaceistobetreatedascitizens,notsubjectsInarecentsurveyofMiddleEasternyouth,theNowishoftheyounginninecountrieswastoliveinafreecountry,although,tobesure,jobsandthedesiretoliveinwellrun,modernsocietiesrankedveryhighaswellYoungpeoplearenotalwaysasourceofviolenceTheWestexperiencedademographicbulgethefamousbabyboominthedecadesafterWorldWarIIthatisknownmainlyforfuelingeconomicgrowthChinaandIndia,likewise,havealargecohortofyoungworkers,andthataddstothosecountries'economicstrengthButwithouteconomicgrowth,jobopportunitiesandasenseofdignity,toomanyyoungpeopleespeciallyyoungmencanmakeformassdiscontentThatiswhathashappenedintheMiddleEast,wherethescaleoftheyouthbulgeisextremeperhapsthelargestintheworldrightnowFromto,ofalloutbreaksofconflictoccurredincountrieswhereormoreofthepopulationwasyoungerthanAndevenplaceswherethebabyboomproducedgrowtharenotwithoutproblemsThepeakyearsoftheWest'sbulgecameinthelates,aperiodassociatedwithyouthrebellionsandmassprotestsJournalists,politiciansandscholarshaveallnotedtheMiddleEast'syouthproblemButtheregion'sgovernmentshavedonelittletoaddressityouthunemploymentremainsstaggeringlyhigh,bysomemeasuresclosetoTheoilboomhascertainlyhelpedtheGulfcountriespayofftheirpeopleinvariousways,butmorethanhalfofthosewholiveintheMiddleEastareinlandsthatdonotproduceoilMoreover,oilhasprovedacurseintherichcountries,wheretheeconomieshavelittletoofferotherthanextractinghydrocarbons,wherearmiesofforeignersdoalltheworkandwhereregimescontinuetooffertheirpeopleabasicbargain:wewillsubsidizeyouaslongasyouacceptourruleRattledbyrecentdevelopments,KuwaitandBahrainbothdecidedtogivealloftheircitizensbonusesthisyear($,inKuwait,$,inBahrain)ThosepaymentsareareminderthatintheMiddleEast,therearetwomodesofcontrol:massrepressionandmassbriberyPerhapsthelatter,usedintheGulfstates,willprovemoreeffectivethoughinBahrain,theregimefacesspecificchallenges,withaSunniminorityrulingoveraShi'itemajorityThebroaderpredicamentfacingbothsystems,however,isapopulationthatisincreasinglyaware,informedandconnectedIt'stoosimpletosaythatwhathappenedinTunisiaandEgypthappenedbecauseofFacebookButtechnologysatellitetelevision,computers,mobilephonesandtheInternethasplayedapowerfulroleininforming,educatingandconnectingpeopleintheregionSuchadvancesempowerindividualsanddisempowerthestateIntheolddays,informationtechnologyfavoredthoseinpower,becauseitwasonetomanyThat'swhyrevolutionariestriedtotakeoverradiostationsinthessotheycouldbroadcastinformationtothemassesToday'stechnologiesareallmanytomany,networksinwhicheveryoneisconnectedbutnooneisincontrolThat'sbadforanyonetryingtosuppressinformationOfcourse,thestatecanfightbackTheEgyptiangovernmentmanagedtoshutdownEgyptians'accesstotheInternetforfivedaysTheIranianregimecloseddowncellphoneserviceattheheightofthegreenmovement'sprotestsinButthinkofthecostsofsuchmovesCanbanksrunwhentheInternetisdownCancommerceexpandwhencellphonesaredemobilizedSyriahasonlynowopenedaccesstoFacebook,butitsbasicapproachremainstokeeptheworldtightlyatbaywhichisamajorobstacletoeconomicgrowthandtotacklingthatvitalproblemofyouthunemploymentNorthKoreacanstaystableaslongasitstaysutterlystagnant(Andthatstabilityisfortheshorttermanyway)Forregimesthatneedorwanttorespondtotheaspirationsoftheirpeople,opennessbecomesaneconomicandpoliticalnecessityThemodernizingimperativesocietiesneedtoembracemoreopennesstomakeprogressiswhyIamallowingmyselftobeoptimisticabouttheprogressoftheyouthrevolutionsIt'seasytobedisappointedwhenlookingattheMiddleEast'ssadrecenthistoryAndyetsomethingintheregionfeelsasifitischangingWarrenBuffettoncesaidthatwhenanyonetellshim,"Thistimeit'sdifferent,"hereachesforhiswalletbecausehefearshe'sgoingtobeswindledWell,IhaveafeelingthatthistimeintheMiddleEast,it'sdifferentButIhavemyhandonmywalletanywayRage,RapandRevolution:InsidetheArabYouthQuakeByBobbyGhoshThursday,Feb,WilliamDanielsPanosforTIMEAt:pmonFeb,asthousandsofpeoplegatheredtoprotestagainsttheirruleratabusyintersectioninManama,thecapitalofthesmallislandnationofBahrain,youcouldjustabouthearoverthegeneralhubbubtheanthemoftheyoungpeoplewhohaveshakenregimesfromNorthAfricatotheArabianGulfItwasn'taversefromtheKoranItwasn'tatraditionaltunefromtheregionItwasrapAreedyfemalevoiceshoutedout,severaltimes,thefirstlineof"RaisLebled,"asongwrittenbytheTunisianrapperknownasElGénéral"MrPresident,yourpeoplearedying,"thewomansangThenothersjoinedin"MrPresident,yourpeoplearedyingPeopleareeatingrubbishLookatwhatishappeningMiserieseverywhere,MrPresidentItalkwithnofearAlthoughIknowIwillgetonlytroubleIseeinjusticeeverywhere"Bahrain,asithappens,doesn'thaveaPresidentit'sruledbyaKing,HamadbinIsaalKhalifaNomatterTheprotestersinBahrainknewthat"RaisLebled"wasthebattlehymnofth
