Would tomatoes with catfish genes taste fishy? Have you ever eaten a genetically modified food? The answers are: yes, no and almost definitely. But according to a survey, most Americans couldn’t answer correctly even though they’ve been eating genetically modified foods — unlabeled — for nearly a decade. Today, roughly 75 percent of U.S. processed foods — boxed cereals, other grain products, frozen dinners, cooking oils and more — contain some genetically modified, or GM, ingredients, said Stephanie Childs of the Grocery Manufacturers of America. Despite dire warnings about "Frankenfoods," there have been no reports of illness from these products of biotechnology. Critics note there’s no system for reporting allergies or other reactions to GM foods. Genetic modification of crops involves transferring genes from a plant or animal into a plant. Nearly all GM changes so far are to boost yields and deter insects and viruses, cutting the use of pesticides, thus making farming more productive and affordable — a particular aid to developing nations. More than 80 percent of the soy and 40 percent of the corn raised in this country is a GM variety. Global plantings of biotech crops — mostly corn and soybeans and much of it for animal feed — grew to about 200 million acres last year, about two-thirds of it in the United States. Experts say within several years there will be new GM foods with taste and nutrition improvements: cooking oils with less trans fat, tastier potatoes and peanuts that don’t trigger allergies. 2、美开始调查温室气体排放 [AP]WASHINGTON - The government will start keeping track of all the "greenhouse" gases that farmers and foresters voluntarily reduce to help combat global warming. Officials in the Energy and Agriculture departments issued guidelines Wednesday for counting those efforts. They said the action indicates how seriously the Bush administration views the problem of gases that trap heat in the atmosphere like a greenhouse. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said farm and forest landowners now have "a unique opportunity to be part of the solution to greenhouse gas emissions" such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, refrigerants and other compounds. The Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service also have prepared an online method for farmers and ranchers to estimate soil carbon sequestration — the natural process by which carbon dioxide in the air is turned into carbon stored in soil and plants. David Hawkins, director of Natural Resources Defense Council’s climate center, called the reporting registry a "charade that is intended to allow the government and the participants to portray that they are doing something about global warming, when they are not." In another case, Hawkins said, one coal-fired power plant in Maryland claims reductions for selling some of its carbon dioxide to the food and beverage industry, even though the carbon dioxide is eventually released anyway once a drink is opened and consumed. 3、印尼又遇地震旅游受影响 A powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean, so soon after the Boxing Day tsunami, will be a big setback for the region’s plans to revive tourism. An earthquake 125 miles off the coast of the Indonesian island Sumatra triggered tsunami warnings. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and India issued tsunami warnings, but fears of a tsunami seemed to subside after around three hours and they were scaled down. The earthquake struck at 16:09 GMT at a magnitude of 8.7. This was 11:09pm local time. There were reports of many deaths in the Indonesian island of Nias, south of the earthquake’s epicentre. Tourism in the region is likely to be affected whether or not the earthquake leads to tsunamis. "As a direct result of the (Boxing Day) tsunami there is a risk that 9% of international travellers planning a holiday in 2005 have switched their travel plans to other regions," says a report published earlier this month. The "Post-Tsunami global travel intentions" report, commissioned by the intergovernmental World Tourism Organisation (WTO), highlights how those worst affected by the tsunami have also been the ones hit by the sharpest falls in visitor numbers. "Since the tsunami disaster, there has been a significant drop in international travel to affected tourist destinations such as Phuket in Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives," says James Murray, executive with Visa International Asia Pacific, which co-authored the report. [AP]PITTSBURGH - What could be better than seeing the first tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered? Watching it being taken apart. Visitors to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, which has one of the oldest and largest dinosaur collections in the nation, will be able to watch as the museum’s collection of fossilized dinosaur skeletons are taken apart before a renovation of the museum’s almost century-old Dinosaur Hall. "People can come in and watch the disarticulation process and watch as they are being reconstructed. We are combining the two things kids of any age love: construction and dinosaurs," said Bill DeWalt, director of the museum. The first dinosaur to come down will be the allosaurus. A large two-legged predator like the T. rex, the allosaurus will be decapitated Monday. Four other dinosaurs will also be taken down and more may be assembled over the next two years as part of the renovation. The $35 million renovation will triple the size of the museum’s Dinosaur Hall, which started with one skeleton — the sauropod Diplodocus carnegii (named for steel magnate Andrew Carnegie). After it’s done, the museum will have room to show off more of its dinosaurs in more dramatic and scientifically accurate poses. 5、指纹探测新技术在美问世 Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists are using a new technique to see fingerprints on surfaces that typically make them invisible. The method uses a technology called mini-X-ray fluorescence to detect chemical elements in fingerprints without altering them, said Christopher Worley, a scientist on the project. "The conventional methods are meant to bring out fingerprint patterns with regular light and they have to treat those with powder, which alters them," Worley said. "With this you don’t have to alter it or treat it at all. We can determine the elements in a fingerprint and get a pattern at the same time." The technology focuses a tight beam of X-rays on surfaces with fingerprints and creates a computer picture out of those scans. The equipment costs about $175,000. For big labs, the method could be a great way to bring out prints that can’t be seen any other way, said Vahid Majidi, another lab scientist. "The technique fills a unique niche," Majidi said. "These are prints that would otherwise be useless. If you have prints on a dark surface, for example, they really don’t develop well using normal techniques. If you have prints from an adolescent or child, the chemicals in the fingertips are different and don’t stick around long enough for traditional methods." The new method might also be able to tell if the person that left them handled certain types of bomb-making materials, said George Havrilla, another lab scientist. "This is a new approach to fingerprint visualization," Havrilla said. "We’re lifting prints, but instead of looking at the finger’s natural oils and organic residues we’re looking at elemental features left behind." The technology for scanning the prints is widely available. What’s new is the method the lab has created to see them which includes computer software and ways of manipulating the machinery, Worley said. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - New research from Canada suggests that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help prevent pancreatic cancer, a particularly deadly type of tumor. The findings, based on a comparison of 585 pancreatic cancer patients and about 4,779 adults without the disease, suggest that the risk of the cancer declines as fruit and vegetable intake increases. Among cancers, pancreatic tumors have one of the most dismal survival rates, with less than 5 percent of patients still alive 5 years after diagnosis. The poor prognosis is in large part due to the fact that the disease is rarely caught early. Because of this, uncovering the modifiable risk factors for the disease is vital, according to Dr. Parviz Ghadirian of the University of Montreal, one of the authors of the new study. Using data from a large study of Canadians diagnosed with cancer between 1994 and 1997, Ghadirian and his colleagues found that higher intakes of fresh fruit and cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower, were associated with a lower risk of pancreatic cancer. For reasons that are unclear, the relationship was confined to men; those with the highest fruit and vegetable intakes were about half as likely to develop pancreatic cancer as those with the lowest intakes. There was no clear association between diet and pancreatic cancer risk among women. 7、锌对学生的记忆力有帮助 GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Zinc improved the memory of seventh-graders who took part in the research, a study found. A total of 209 of them were involved in a study at the federal Human Nutrition Research Center in Grand Forks from 2002 through 2004. James Penland, the project’s lead researcher, said students who were given 20 milligrams of zinc a day with a glass of orange juice performed better in recalling information than students who were given 10 milligrams or students given a placebo with no zinc. Penland, a research psychologist, launched the study to help the government determine recommended daily allowances for adolescents, most of which are based on research involving adults. The study found no ill effects in students’ school performance or social interactions from the higher zinc intake, he said. "I’m most confident of the findings with memory," Penland said. Laurie Tweten, a seventh-grade health teacher at South Middle School in Grand Forks, helped coordinate students’ participation in the study. The students were excited to contribute to science, she said, but researchers tabulated the results of the memory and cognitive-learning tasks, so she notice no difference in their classroom performance. Penland said the risk of zinc deficiency is higher for adolescents because they are going through a time of rapid growth. "We’re in the midst of writing it up for publication," he said of the study, "and I think we’re going to try to target adolescents who are more likely to be zinc deficient." 8、日本4月失业率下降至4.4% Japan’s jobless rate fell to 4.4 percent in April, the lowest mark in more than six years, the government said Tuesday. The April rate was down slightly from the 4.5 percent in March. The result was also better than the 4.5 percent jobless rate predicted by economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires. The steady decline in unemployment suggested that Japan’s labor market has rebounded along with the nation’s economy, despite some fluctuations in the rates over the past year.Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki said the decline reflected a steady recovery in the nation’s economy. "Overall, the economy remains in a firm recovery." The April jobless rate was the lowest for the world’s second-largest economy since December 1998, when the rate was also at 4.4 percent. The total number of unemployed fell for the 23rd straight month to 3.1 million, down 250,000 from the same month a year earlier, the Ministry of Public Management said. Before falling to 4.5 percent in March, Japan’s unemployment rate stood at 4.7 percent in February, and 4.5 percent in January and December. The ratio of new job offers to new job seekers, adjusted for seasonal factors, rose to 1.42 in April from 1.35 a month earlier. This means there were 142 new jobs for every 100 people newly seeking work in April. There were 94 jobs offered for every 100 workers seeking employment in April. 9、脱脂乳可降低糖尿病危害 [Time]A Harvard study suggests skim milk and other products may decrease a man’s risk of developing type II diabetes. Get ready for another skirmish in the milk wars. Whenever there’s anything positive to report about the health effects of milk, it seems some group always tries to shoot down the results. Often that’s more because of an ideological gripe about whether people should drink milk from cows—or any other animal—in the first place. The latest study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine looks at data from an ongoing study of more than 40,000 male doctors, pharmacists and other health professionals that’s being lead by doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. The conclusion: regularly consuming low-fat dairy products—such as skim milk or low-fat yogurt—slightly decreases a man’s risk of developing type II diabetes. The effect was modest but held true whether or not study participants were physically active, overweight or had a family history of diabetes. Previous studies have shown that low-fat dairy products, as part of a diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables, also helps to reduce high blood pressure. 10、5月通用福特汽车销量下降 [Yahoo]The U.S. automotive scene changed little in May: General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. again reported decreased demand for their vehicles, particularly trucks and SUVs, while Chrysler Group and Asian brands generally posted positive results. To make matters worse for GM and Ford — and their suppliers — both automakers said Wednesday they plan to cut third-quarter production because of sluggish business. The cuts are sure to hurt the companies’ bottom lines. George Pipas, Ford’s top sales analyst, said May was a weak month for the industry, especially compared to last year. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate for May was 16.6 million vehicles, down from 17.7 million last May. The rate indicates what sales would be for the full year if they remained at the same pace for all 12 months. Full-year sales for 2004 were about 17 million. "The consumer appears to have taken a little pause," Pipas said. "The Memorial Day weekend was pretty strong, but it didn’t outdo the month-end reporting of a year ago." GM and Ford, the nation’s two biggest automakers, saw sales slip again in May as customers continued to turn away from their sport utility vehicles and trucks in favor of models from Asian competitors. The traditional Big Three automakers saw truck sales slip 4.4 percent in May, while Asian automakers saw comparable sales rise 6.9 percent. There were some bright spots for domestic automakers. DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler Group said car sales rose 13 percent and truck sales were up 3 percent for the month. The Chrysler 300 sedan and the Chrysler Town and Country minivan helped the Chrysler brand set an all-time monthly sales record, the company said. Ford’s Mustang coupe had its highest May sales since 1980, up 47 percent from last May. But that blistering pace will likely subside in June, Pipas said, because the company can’t keep up with demand. GM’s Cadillac division also enjoyed its best sales month in 12 years. The news for Asian automakers was generally good, though results were lower than the double-digit increases some companies saw in April. Toyota Motor Corp.’s sales rose 7.8 percent last month, dragged down a bit by flat truck sales. Overall sales for the automaker are up 11.9 percent for the year. Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co.’s truck sales are up 23 percent for the year thanks to its new Tucson SUV, which had a record sales month in May. Hyundai’s sales gained 8.5 percent for the month and 12.5 percent for the year.Nissan Motor Co.’s truck sales are up 27 percent for the year, led by the Armada SUV. Nissan’s sales jumped 15.5 percent in May and are up 15.8 percent for the year. 11、FCC延长数字电视服务期限 WASHINGTON - Television viewers who crave the crisp, clear pictures of digital TV got a boost Thursday when the government ordered manufacturers to include the technology in all midsize models by next spring. The Federal Communications Commission(FCC) voted 4-0 to require televisions with screens from 25 inches to 36 inches be digital-ready by March 1. That is four months earlier than the commission decreed in 2002. The commission also proposed moving the deadline for all small TVs — those 13 inches to 24 inches — to the end of 2006, rather than mid-2007, as had been set. That proposal, which also applies to DVD players and other devices that can receive a TV signal, will be voted after a period of public comment. Electronics retailers and manufacturers had asked two changes: scrapping of the July 1 deadline for 50 percent of new midsize TVs to have digital tuners and moving up of the final compliance deadline to next March instead of July 1, 2006. The 50 percent threshold applies to each manufacturer or importer.Retailers and manufacturers said this July’s deadline was slowing the transition to digital because consumers were continuing to buy more of the traditional analog TVs, which are less expensive. The FCC acknowledged those market concerns. But the agency refused to budge on the 50 percent deadline. Instead, commissioners decided to use the request to speed up the overall transition from analog to digital. The proposed 2006 deadline to have all TVs larger than 13 inches equipped with digital tuners would coincide with the target date Congress has set for ending analog transmissions. "We need to push the transition to its conclusion as expeditiously as possible," Commissioner Kathleen Q. Abernathy said.Broadcasters hailed the decision. Edward O. Fritts, chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters, said it was "a powerful pro-consumer mechanism for moving the digital television transition forward." 12会跳舞的机器人出尽风头 NAGAKUTE, Japan - They could hit fastballs, draw portraits and be seen breathing. Not bad for robots. Even so, these droids of all shapes and sizes — more than 60 on display at the World Expo on Thursday — still need some work. Their developers say it will be several years before robots that are designed to be part of everyday lives — rather than serve as simple novelties — take their place helping the sick, rescuing disaster victims and entertaining families. Lined up in a row of booths, the robots were on display in the sprawling expo in central Japan to showcase Japan’s leadership in robotics. With the nation’s economy still sluggish, corporations, researchers and government officials are hoping the sector can provide new growth opportunities. The Japan Robot Association, a trade group, expects the Japanese market for next-generation robots — those being developed now as opposed to industrial robots currently in use — to reach $14 billion by 2010 and more than $37 billion by 2025.But all the robots on display were test models, and several had obvious glitches. Cooper, a mechanical portrait artist developed by a candy maker, was drawing the faces of visitors on large cookies with a laser pen. It has a program that translates images from a digital camera into line-drawing instructions, but sometimes the robot delivered only a mishmash of scribbles. Another model, the Batting Robot, has a vision system that handles 1,000 images a second, more than 30 times the human eye, allowing it to accurately hit pitches up to 100 mph. At the expo, however, it was using a plastic bat to hit rubber balls at far slower speeds. Hiroshima Univers
