1. The main (principal) idea of this passage is 2. What’s the main idea (topic, subject) of this passage? 3. This passage centers (focus) on 4. This passage mainly (primarily) discusses 5. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is 6. The best title of this passage is 7. Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage? 8. Which of the following sentences best summarizes the author’s main point? 这些表达方式有:therefore, as a result, thus, so, moreover, furthermore, what’s more, most important of all, but, however, rather, yet等等。 例如:选项中包含有all, completely, only, almost, absolutely, definitely等。 The passage is mainly about . A. the benefits of manageable stress B. how to avoid stressful situation C. how to cope with stress effectively D. the effects of stress hormones on memory 原文 “Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise.” said Dr. Hans Selye, the first physician to document the effects of stress on the body. While here’s no question that continuous stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging situations in which you’re able to rise to the occasion can be good for you… 【解析】选A。 What is the author’s purpose in writing this article? A. To justify the study of the Boston University Medical Center. B. To stress the importance of maintaining proper weight. C. To support the statement made by York Onnen. D. To show the most effective way to lose weight. Exercise is one of the few factors with a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Unfortunately, that message has not gotten through to the average American, who would rather try switching to “light” beer and low-calorie bread than increase physical exertion. The Centers for Disease Control, for example, found that less than one-fourth of overweight adults who were trying to shed pounds said they were combining exercise with their diet... Exercise is one of the few factors with a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Exercise One The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon(结肠). Different cultures are more likely to cause certain different illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, about 35 years ago, government researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic (致癌物的)additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue. Q: What is the best possible title of the passage? A. Drug B. Cancer C. Food D. Health Exercise Two Believe it or not, optical illusion can cut highway crashes. Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons, painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes. Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards are the greatest ―curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars. Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents. Q:The passage mainly discusses ______. A) a new way of highway speed control B) a new pattern for painting highways C) a new approach to training drivers D) a new type of optical illusion Exercise Three Most people would agree that, although our age exceeds all previous ages in knowledge, there has been no corresponding increase in wisdom. But agreement ceases as soon as we attempt to define “wisdom” and consider means of promoting it. There are several factors that contribute to wisdom. Of these I should put first a sense of proportion: the capacity to take account of all the important factors in a problem and to attach to each its due weight. This has become more difficult than it used to be owing to the extent and complexity of the special knowledge required of various kinds of technicians. Suppose, for example, that you are engaged in research in scientific medicine. The work is difficult and is likely to absorb the whole of your mind. You have no time to consider the effect which your discoveries or inventions may have outside the field of medicine. You succeed (let us say) as modern medicine has succeeded, in enormously lowering the infant death-rate, not only in Europe and America, but also in Asia and Africa. This has the entirely unintended result of making the food supply inadequate and lowering the standard of life in the parts of the world that have the greatest populations. To take an even more dramatic example, which is in everybody’s mind at the present time; you study the makeup of the atom from a disinterested(无私的)desire for knowledge, and by chance place in the hands of a powerful mad man the means of destroying the human race. Therefore, with every increase of knowledge and skill, wisdom becomes more necessary, for every such increase augments(增强)our capacity for realizing our purposes, and therefore augments our capacity for evil, if our purposes are unwise. Q: What is the main idea of the passage? A) It is unwise to place the results of scientific research in the hands of a powerful mad man. B) The more knowledge one has, the wiser one becomes. C) Any increase of knowledge could lead to disastrous results without the guidance of wisdom. D) Wisdom increases in proportion to one’s age. 1. The writer (author, passage) implies (suggests) that . 2. It can be inferred form the passage that . 3. Which of the following can be concluded from this passage? 4. What does the author conclude about? 5. The passage is intended to . 6. The first paragraph of this passage is to . 7. How does the author seem to feel about this issue? What did the author say about her own writing experience? A. She was constantly under pressure of writing more. B. Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers. C. She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer. D. Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations. 原文 As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface. Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again? A) She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields. B) She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination. C) She is not good at telling stories of the kind. D) She finds space research more important. 原文 I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what is like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes. …the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research papers, awards—was viewed through the lens of gender (性别) politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind. Exercise Four The American Revolution was not a revolution in the sense of a radical or total change. It was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. What happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. During the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of them were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on. America’s War of Independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. One was Canada, which received its first large influx of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the United States. Another was Australia, which became a penal colony now that America was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. The third newcomer ― the United States ― based itself squarely on republican principles. Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. In some states, notably Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Parliament. Q1: In the first paragraph, what does the author suggest about the French and Russia revolution? A. They were explosive and abrupt. B. They were ineffective. C. They involved only those people living in urban areas. D. They led to the release of all political prisoners. Q2. It can be inferred from the passage that the loyalists who escaped to Canada contribute to the birth of modern . A. Russia B. French C. United States D. Canada Q3. What will the paragraph following the passage most probably discuss? A. The transport of prisoners to Australia. B. The creation of now state governments. C. Events lending up to the American Revolution. D. How Canada and the United States became friends. Exercise Five To produce the upheaval in the United States that changed and modernized the domain of higher education from the mid 1860’s to the mid – 1880’s, three primary causes interacted. The emergence of a half dozen leaders in education provided the personal force that was needed. Moreover, an outcry for a fresher, more practical, and more advanced kind of instruction arose among the alumni and friends of nearly all of the old colleges and grew into a movement that overrode all conservative opposition. The aggressive “Young Yale” movement appeared, demanding partial alumni control, a more liberal spirit, and a broader course of study. The graduates of Harvard College simultaneously rallied to relieve the college’s poverty and demand new enterprise. Education was pushing toward higher standards in the East by throwing off church leadership everywhere, and in the West by finding a wider range of studies and a new sense of public duty. The old-style classical education received its most crushing blow in the citadel of Harvard College, where Dr. Charles Eliot, a young captain of thirty-five, son of a former treasurer of Harvard, led the progressive forces. Five revolutionary advances were made during the first year of Dr. Eliot’s administration. They were the elevation and amplification of entrance requirements, the enlargement of the curriculum and the development of the elective system, the recognition of graduate study in the liberal arts, the raising of professional training in law, medicine, and engineering to a postgraduate level, and the fostering of greater maturity in student life. Standards of admission were sharply advanced in 1872-1873 and 1876-1877. By the appointment of a dean to take charge of student affairs, and a wise handling of discipline, the undergraduates were led to regard themselves more as young gentlemen and less as young animals. One new course of study after another was opened up―science, music, the history of the fine arts, advanced Spanish, political economy, physics, classical philology, and international law. Q1. According to the passage, which of the following can be inferred about Harvard College before progressive changes occurred? A. Admission standards were lower. B. Students were younger. C. Classes ended earlier. D. Courses were more practical. Q2. From the passage it can be concluded that which of the following was a characteristic of the classical course of study? A. Most students majored in education. B. Students were limited in their choice of courses. C. Students had to pass five levels of study. D. Courses were so difficult that most students failed. 文章中第一句就指出 “The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health.” Exercise Two 【解析】选A。 Exercise Three 【解析】选C。 Exercise Four 1. 【解析】选A。文章的第一段第二句 “It was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations.” 文章第二段的第一句有“America's War of Independence heralded the birth of three modern nations ...” Exercise Five 1.【解析】选A。 1) What causes ...? 2) How many ...? 3) Why does the author mention ...? 4)Where in this passage does the author mention…? 1. The author (or the passage) states that 2. According to the author (or the passage), 3. Due to , the author believe … 1) Which of the following statements is (not) true (or correct)? 2) All the following statements are true except . 3) The author states all of the items listed except . 4) Which of the following is not a result of ...? Q: What is the most striking feature of the University of Phoenix? A) All its courses are offered online. B) Its online courses are of the best quality. C) It boasts the largest number of students on campus. D) Anyone taking its online courses is sure to get a degree. 原文 By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distance learning (DL), and among the larger schools, it’s close to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven’t heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. It enrolls 90,000 students, a statistic used to support its claim to be the largest private university in the country. 【解析】选A。 Exercise Six Criticism of research lays a significant foundation for future investigative work, but when students begin their own projects, they are likely to find that the standards of validity in field work are considerably more rigorous (严格的, 严厉的) than the standards for most library research. When students are faced with the concrete problem of proof by field demonstration, they usually discover that many of the important relationships they may have criticized other researcher for failing to demonstrate are very elusive (难以理解的) indeed. They will find, if they submit an outline or questionnaire to their classmates for criticism, that other students make comments similar to some they themselves may have made in discussing previously published research. For example student researchers are likely to begin with a general question but find themselves forced to narrow its focus. They may learn that questions whose meanings seem perfectly biased (有偏见
