T h e m o t o r h a s two c o m b i n a t i o n s of w i n d i n g c o n n e c t i o n s a n d o n e o f them i s s e l e c t e d i n a c c o r d a n c e w i t h t h e o p e r a t i n g c o n d i t i o n s . By t h i s t e c h n i q u e t h e g e a r box i n t h e s p i n d l e d r i v e s i s e l i n i n a t e d . I NTRUDUCT I ON DC s p i n d l e m o t o r s f o r m a c h i n e t o o l s h a v e been r e - p l a c e d by v e c t o r c o n t r o l l e d i n d u c t i o n m o t o r s r e c e n t l y b e c a u s e o f t h e low m a i n t e n a n c e r e q u i r e m e n t s and h i g h s p e e d c a p a b i l i t i e s o f t h e i n d u c t i o n m o t o r [ I ] . I n s p i n d l e a p p l i c a t i o n s , a w ide c o n s t a n t power r a n g e of 1 : l O t o 1 :30 i s r e q u i r e d t o c o p e w i t h v a r i o u s mach in - i n g c o n d i t i o n s s u c h a s c u t t i n g t o o l s a n d w o r k m a t e r i a l s . I n c o n v e n t i o n a l s p i n d l e s , a g e a r t r a i n 1 s combined w i t h a m o t o r h a v i n g a c o n s t a n t power r a n g e of 1:3 t o 1:5. The a u t h o r s h a v e p r o p o s e d a n AC s p i n d l e m o t o r d r i v e w i t h a w i d e c o n s t a n t p o w e r r a n g e b y s w i t c h i n g t h e v i n d i n g c o n n e c t i o n s of t h e m o t o r . U s i n g t h i s t e c h n i q u e , g e a r l e s s s p i n d l e d r i v e s were r e a l i z e d a n d h a v e b e e n w i d e l y a c c e p t e d i n t h e m a r k e t .
